Newbury Park rewarded for 11-2 season
Newbury Park High's most successful season in more than a decade paid dividends in postseason honors for the 2007 Ventura County Football Coaches Association's Large Schools football team.
Three Newbury Park players and the program's coaching staff were recognized.
Chris Brown, who set a Newbury Park program season rushing record with 1,904 yards, was named as the county's offensive back of the year.
Teammates Tim Ketaily and Chance Flaaten were selected as the offensive lineman and linebacker of the year, respectively.
Newbury Park (11-2), which shared the Marmonte League title with Westlake, had the most wins since its 1995 team (13-1) advanced to a section championship game. For that achievement, Newbury Park was rewarded with the varsity staff of the year honor.
Westlake's Curtis Peterson and Justin Lilley were named as the receiver and defensive back of the year, respectively.
Derek Shutt of Oxnard is the defensive lineman of the year.
St. Bonaventure's Darrell Scott, who rushed for 2,589 yards and scored 37 touchdowns, was relegated to the second team as a utility player. Scott stirred controversy by transferring from Moorpark after his junior year.

Joining Shutt on the first-team defensive line were Ryan Medina (St. Bonaventure), Casey Blum (Moorpark) and Jackson Powell (Newbury Park).
Colby Cameron of Newbury Park is the first-team punter.
Named to the second-team offensive backfield were: Dasmen Stewart (Oxnard), Langston Jackson (Simi Valley), Doug Shumway (Agoura) and Brandon Dore (Ventura).
Members of the second-team offensive line were: Rudy Perez and Juan Carillo (Oxnard), Wade Whitaker (Camarillo), Paul Ui (Rio Mesa), James Nelson (Buena) and Jack Knauer (Newbury Park).
Camarillo's Kevin Kawamoto, Oxnard's Jamal Smith, Agoura's Mike Cammorata and Simi Valley's Keith Williams were the second-team wide receivers. Eric Bailey of Agoura is the second-team kicker.

Who picks these teams and when and how?

The selection by the coaches is very sad for both Darrell Scott and Chris Brown. For Scott it is sad because he deserves 1st team, and for Brown because he knows the only reason he was selected to 1st team is because of the politics that goes on in Ventura County Football and the HATE that most coaches have for SB.
I challenge any of the coaches to give us true Statistical reasons why Brown was selected over Scott for 1st team. DO YOU HAVE THE GUTS???
I hope one day Darrell is signing a PRO contract and at the same time giving the coaches of VTA County the finger like they just gave him. Good luck Darrell.

The Ventura County Football Coaches Association have earned a "B" grade for their omission of the best running back in the county, on the Large Schools first team selections. The "B" for being Babyish and Bad sports. You have proven to me that your Association has zero credibility for not selecting Darrell Scott for his accomplishments on the field.

Not my words but to the point:
D. Scott is currently back in New York this week receiving a prestigious National HS Award. Herbstreet was one of the presenters. He took a backhand slap at the VC Coaches and made them look like idiots in his speech. It was funny......words like "jealous", "grade-school coaches", "you-kidding?" filled the presentation.
Next-up, ALL-CIF and ALL-STATE awards. VC coaches are looking more stupid (and "good ol' boy fraternity" to outsiders) as each of these awards mount in the coming weeks. How foolish these coaches are....

Congratulations to the VC HS Football coaches for their 'oversight' in the Darrell Scott matter. Give credit where credit is due and Darrell Scott is deserving of the recognition that he rightly has earned. Your hatred of St. Bonaventure football has reached an all-time high and you should be ashamed of yourselves for acting like cowards. There are many outstanding athletes in our great county but your ignorance and jealousies have slighted one of our best.
I hope you enjoy watching Mr. Scott as he begins his next successful journey in the college ranks.
