VENTURA

Newspaper carrier carjacked; two sought

Ventura police Monday were looking for two men suspected of carjacking a newspaper carrier.

The carjacking was reported at 3:35 a.m. Monday in the 11000 block of Citrus Drive in Ventura, authorities said.

The carrier, who delivers The Star, was outside his car when two young men approached and asked for a ride, Ventura police said.

When he declined, the men pushed him out of the way, jumped into his car and drove away.

Police were looking for the vehicle, described as a late-1990s, red Toyota Tacoma pickup with bundles of newspapers in the back. The license plate number of the vehicle was 6A54968.

Anyone with information on the incident should call Ventura police at 339-4394 or Crime Stoppers at 385-TALK. Tipsters who give information leading to an arrest could receive up to a $1,000 reward.

THOUSAND OAKS

Victim of fatal car accident is identified

Authorities Monday identified a man killed in a solo car crash the night before in Thousand Oaks.

Tim Whinery, 41, of Thousand Oaks was pronounced dead at 10:49 p.m. Sunday at the scene of the crash near Pederson Road and Calle Almendro, Senior Deputy Medical Examiner Armando Chavez said.

The accident occurred about 10:45 p.m. when Whinery, driving westbound on Pederson at a high rate of speed, lost control near Calle Almendro, according to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

He was killed instantly when his vehicle slid sideways into the center divider and wrapped around a tree, authorities said.

Investigators had not determined what caused Whinery to lose control of his car, sheriff's Capt. Rick Barrios said Monday.

Pederson Road was closed near Calle Almendro for about five hours following the collision.
