West Ranch High School student honored by LFCU

West Ranch High School senior Surya Singh is the recipient of Lockheed Federal Credit Union's Student of the Month award for November. She has been selected because of her overall performance, including academic accomplishments, extra curricular activities and leadership abilities.Singh has received a number of awards including an AP Scholar Award and AP Scholar Award with Distinction. She is also a member of the California Scholarship Federation, Gifted and Talented Education and National Honors Society."Surya (Singh) is an extremely talented young lady both academically and socially," said West Ranch Counselor Suzanne VanAmberg who nominated Singh. "She is extremely motivated to pursue her interests in science, particularly nanotechnology, and hopes to attend (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the fall."Singh is the founder and president of the school's Model United Nations club. She also served an internship as an editorial assistant for American Scientific Publishers and has had two published research review articles.In Singh's spare time, she volunteers at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and the American Red Cross. In addition, she tutors elementary and junior high school students.The Student of the Month program recognizes one high school students from the William S. Hart district who demonstrates strong academic achievement, leadership traits and participates in extra curricular or community related activities. Selected students receive a cash award of $250 and recognition in district publications. LFCU partnered with the William S. Hart district to launch the Student of the Month program in 2005.During the academic year, the Student of the Month program recognizes one high school student each month. School administrators or faculty nominate students based on overall performance, including academic accomplishments, extra curricular activities, leadership, and other notable experiences. The winning high school student receives a cash award of $250. More than 9,000 Lockheed Federal Credit Union members are residents of the Santa Clarita Valley, where Lockheed Federal Credit Union (LFCU) operates three branches: Valencia Bouquet Canyon, Valencia Town Center and Stevenson Ranch.
