Wood, Potter named top small-school backs

Two players with lead roles for their CIF championship teams share co-offensive backs-of-the-year honors on the All-Ventura County Small Schools football team.

Cierre Wood, who led Santa Clara High to its first CIF title in 42 years, and Christopher Potter, a multi-purpose player for Oaks Christian School's fifth consecutive section championship, head the small schools team selected by the Ventura County Football Coaches Association.

Wood rushed for a school-record and county-leading 2,615 yards and scored 42 touchdowns. Potter passed for 1,907 yards and 21 touchdowns, rushed for 845 yards and 19 TDs and intercepted nine passes on defense.

Oaks Christian's Dominick Denham and Santa Clara's Randi Vines are the co-defensive linemen of the year.

Kacy Reed of Nordhoff and Sean Westgate of Oak Park are the offensive lineman and linebacker of the year, respectively.

Nordhoff was picked as the small schools' staff of the year.

Named to the offensive backfield were Damian Kaiser (Nordhoff), Kyle Shorten (Oak Park), J.P. O'Fallon (Malibu), Potter and Wood.

The all-county offensive linemen are: Dustin Geyer (Oak Park), Trace Biskin (Oaks Christian), Daniel Garcia (Santa Clara), Lincoln Sprague (Villanova), Jose Estrada (Fillmore) and Reed.

Oak Park's Brett Zeolla and Nordhoff's Albert Mireles are the all-county receivers. Chris Coyle of Oaks Christian was picked as the tight end.

Also named to the all-county offense were Nordhoff kicker David Brown and Viewpoint utility player Jaime Wheeler-Silverman.

All-county linebackers are: Chris Decar (Oak Park), Chris Gibson (Nordhoff), David Ortiz (Santa Clara), Malcolm Jones (Oaks Christian), Marcus Robbins (Malibu) and Westgate.

The top defensive linemen are: Andrew Hewittson (Oak Park), Artie Lopez and Vines (Santa Clara) and Denham.

Members of the secondary are: Ryan Haines (Oak Park), Quinn Pawlick (Santa Paula), Noah Aguirre (Fillmore) and Donald Espinosa (Santa Clara).

Santa Clara and Oak Park had the JV and frosh staffs of the year, respectively.

Sam Briglio of Nordhoff was honored with the Tony Lopez Award, presented to the county's walk-on coach of the year.
