Padres reach deal for Edmonds

Hours after talks broke off with Mike Cameron, the San Diego Padres agreed in principle to acquire center fielder Jim Edmonds and cash from the St. Louis Cardinals for a minor leaguer.

The deal was waiting approval from the commissioner's office because it will involve around $1 million going from the Cardinals to the Padres, according to a source with knowledge of the deal, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been finalized.

The Cardinals will get minor league third baseman David Freese.

Edmonds, 37, was slowed by injuries last season but the eight-time Gold Glove winner recently pronounced himself fit.

The trade comes after the Padres were spurned by three outfielders in less than a week.

Cameron's agent broke off negotiations for a deal to bring back the center fielder on Friday. Left fielder Milton Bradley on Sunday accepted a one-year deal from the Texas Rangers worth approximately $5 million. The Padres had offered $4 million.

Blue Jays, Eckstein finalize one-year deal: Scrappy shortstop David Eckstein and the Toronto Blue Jays finalized their $4.5 million, one-year contract.

The 2006 World Series MVP for the Angels, Eckstein spent the past three seasons with the Cardinals. He batted a career-best .309 this year with three homers, 31 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 117 games.

Rangers sign reliever Fukumori: Just call him Kaz. That's what the Texas Rangers' new relief pitcher prefers. Acquiring help for the bullpen, the Rangers introduced Japanese reliever Kazuo Fukumori after the sides agreed to a $3 million, two-year deal that includes a team option for 2010.

While Fukumori knows little English, he introduced himself and added, "Call me Kaz." The right-hander said he came to America for a new challenge.

The Rangers also signed infielder Edgardo Alfonzo to a minor league contract.

Fukumori spent the past 13 seasons in Japan, where he was 34-42 with a 3.72 ERA and 72 saves in 377 games (47 starts). He was exclusively a reliever the last five seasons.

Floyd joins Rays: Cliff Floyd agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, who were searching for a left-handed hitter and someone to help replace Delmon Young in right field. The 35-year-old Floyd batted .284 with nine homers and 45 RBIs in 108 games for the Chicago Cubs this season.

Estes, Rusch get minor league deals from Padres: Left-handers Shawn Estes and Glendon Rush, neither of whom pitched in the big leagues this season, agreed to minor league contracts with the Padres. Both were invited to spring training.

Lamb reaches deal with Twins: Third baseman Mike Lamb and the Minnesota Twins agreed to a $6.6 million, two-year contract with an option for 2010.

Beam, Pirates agree on minor deal: T.J. Beam, a right-hander not offered a contract by the New York Yankees, agreed to a minor league contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
