The Star's annual Bellringer drive will run through Christmas, with the newspaper publishing daily, except Mondays, a list of new contributions. Although the newspaper acknowledges all contributions, donors can remain anonymous if desired. All money raised will be given to the Salvation Army to serve needy local people.
Jill Bernick had never given to The Star's Bellringer before this year, but then this hasn't been an ordinary year. The Camarillo retiree gave $50 in memory of J.J., the therapy dog that had given love to seniors, troubled children and hospital patients in a career covering almost nine years before her death in May.
"I think she earned it," Bernick said. "She was a very hard-working dog, and she did a lot."
Licensed through the pet therapy foundation Love on a Leash, J.J. was known for her sloppy wet kisses.
She went to the Casa Pacifica children's center, five assisted-living homes, an adult day care center and St. John's hospitals in Oxnard and Camarillo. But she also was a family favorite, Bernick said.
Bernick said J.J. is one of a series of golden retrievers that she and her husband, Jack, have taken into their home over the years. The animal died in her sleep at nearly 13 years of age.
