Association to hold 22nd annual art competition

The board of directors of the Buenaventura Art Association has announced its 22nd annual open art competition.

The competition features cash prizes totaling $1,600 for best of show, first place, second place and third place. While only one best of show prize will be awarded, two each will be awarded in the categories of first through third place — one for a two-dimensional work of art and one for a three-dimensional work. Paintings, drawings, sculptures, mixed media pieces and photography will all be accepted for consideration.

The show, which will be juried, is open to all professional and amateur artists who live in Ventura County, with entry submissions due at the gallery Jan. 13 and 14. The accepted works will be on display at the main Buenaventura Gallery in downtown Ventura from Jan. 15 through Feb. 2, and all artwork will be available for purchase.

For the first time, a special award will honor an area artist for his or her contribution to the community and the Buenaventura Arts Association. The 2008 inaugural "Lifetime Achievement Award" will go to Carlise Cooper, who will be a special guest at the show's reception Jan. 19.

"Carlise is being honored because he is part of the reason that Ventura is The New Art City.' He has educated generations of Ventura artists," said Christine Beirne, executive director of the Buenaventura Art Association. "We are proud to recognize his incredible contribution to the arts in Ventura."

Cooper has been a member of the art faculty at Ventura College since 1963 and has had more than 30 one-man exhibitions in Southern California.

As part of the "Lifetime Achievement Award," he will have his own wall in the show that will include a selection of his work from a career that spans almost 70 years.

The Buenaventura Art Association's main gallery is at 700 E. Santa Clara St. For more information, call 648-1235 or visit www.buenaventuragallery.org for a submission form.
