'Epic' swells predicted along county's coastline

"Surf's up" doesn't come close to the wave conditions forecasters are predicting for Wednesday. "Epic" is how Surfline.com is describing the swell that could produce waves as high as 16 feet in Ventura County.

Winds are predicted to be relatively light, possibly producing the biggest, best surf of the year, especially on west-facing breaks, said Nathan Cool, chief forecaster for Wetsand.com. Cool predicts some sets could get as high as 20 feet.

Waves that size are not for the casual surfer. Cool warns on his Web site that such waves can break boards and backs. Strong tides and rip currents will be present, he said. The swell is expected to arrive today and last through Thursday. The Weather Service and the Coast Guard are also warning boaters to be aware of the potential for rough seas.

The National Weather Service is predicting moderate flooding in low-lying areas caused by a combination of the surf and a moderately high tide.
