Fernando Vargas' farewell fight has a new date.
Vargas' fight with Ricardo Mayorga — postponed from its original September date when Vargas was discovered to be suffering from anemia — will now be held the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23. The fight remains at its original location, Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
"We think it's a pretty good time for a fight," said Joe Pecora, Vargas' business manager and the vice president of the boxer's promotional firm, Vargas Entertainment Promotions.
"There weren't a lot of dates to choose from," said Pecora. "Of the ones that were out there, this is probably the best. We didn't want to put it too far out, because we had a heck of a momentum going. At the same time, we had to give Fernando time to get well."
Pecora said Vargas would probably begin to "ease back into camp" in a week or a week and a half.
At the time of last week's postponement, it was reported the fight — originally scheduled for Sept. 8 — had already sold more than $1 million in tickets.
