Gala and Spirit Award Dinner fundraiser slated

The Free Clinic of Simi Valley has announced its annual Gala and Spirit Award Dinner for Oct. 27 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. It will feature an auction, dinner, special guests and an award to a local leader.

The event's honorary chairman is state Assemblyman Cameron Smyth of the 38th District.

"We are thrilled to have Assemblyman Smyth involved with our gala, which we depend on greatly each year to serve the uninsured working poor in our communities who have nowhere else to turn for needed health and counseling services," said Fred Bauermeister, executive director of the Free Clinic.

A reception and tours of the library are scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and auction at 7 p.m. and program at 8 p.m.

The clinic seeks donated auction items to help boost the event's fundraising capability.

Smyth was elected in 2006 and represents a district that includes the cities of Simi Valley, Santa Clarita, Los Angeles and Glendale. Previously he served on the Santa Clarita City Council, twice as mayor.

The assemblyman and his wife, Lena, have been very active in their community, volunteering for numerous organizations including the American Red Cross local blood drive program, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association and the Special Olympics.

The Free Clinic of Simi Valley provides medical services as a nonprofit, volunteer-based community service organization. Its mission is to provide medical care, counseling, dental and legal assistance to individuals and families, regardless of their ability to pay.

The clinic operates thanks to dozens of volunteers who give their time to serve the less fortunate. The clinic welcomes volunteers, particularly from the medical field, including physicians.
