Whisenhunt: Tiny Pieront puts in some big races
Pierpont Bay Yacht Club is one of the smallest clubs on the Gold Coast, but it consistently puts on the biggest sailboat races.
On Saturday, PBYC wrapped up its Land Rover Series with the Tri Point Race and attracted 38 boats. That's almost more boats than the club has members.
Taking top overall honors was Alex Blankfield's Santa Cruz 50, Deception, which was first in Class A and first overall in the spinnaker fleet.
The non-spinnaker class came out in force, with 15 boats. Brent Swanson's Islander 29, Velero took first in non-spinnaker B and first overall in that fleet. First in non-spinnaker A was Dennis West's Beneteau 44.7, West Wing.
The fastest boat around the 34-mile course, which left oil rig Gina and Anacapa Island to starboard, was Bill Gibbs' 52-foot catamaran, Afterburner. The big twin hull sliced around the course in 2 hours, 35 minutes and 9 seconds — a speed that would have outrun many power boats. The fastest monohull, Deception, took almost two more hours to complete the course.
Linda Witham, driving her Hunter 40, Sassified, won the lady skipper trophy for being the lady skipper with the best corrected time.
