Editorial: Bare cupboards

The cupboard's nearly bare at Care & Share, a self-supporting food bank in Simi Valley. Recently, some diabetic seniors who depend on it to help supplement their monthly groceries could not get the types of food their diets require.

No one wants to see anyone go hungry, but the reality is that too many do, especially in Ventura County where the cost of living is high, especially for seniors on fixed incomes.

Care & Share serves about 100 diabetic seniors. But a summer slump in food and monetary donations means the food bank cannot supply some of the items they need, such as tuna, green beans and sugar-free cereal.

In all, 500 people rely on Care & Share for monthly food supplements. Most, 350, are seniors.

In addition to a decline in donations, Care & Share picked up new clients when the Simi Valley chapter of Older Adults Services and Intervention System closed in June. OASIS, as it was known, helped fragile, low-income seniors remain in their homes.

What can you do to help?

That's easy: Donate money or food, preferably canned goods, package mixes, rice, etc.

It's best to call before making a donation. Care & Share's phone number is 522-5676 and it is located at 5924 Los Angeles Ave, Unit F, Simi Valley. It is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

All it takes is a phone call and a bit of sharing to show you care for those struggling to make ends meet.

I have asked you before sir, now I ask again: When was the last time you gave to this worthy organization; either of your time or money?

My father always said, if you don't like something change it. Or if you can't change it right away, put yourself in a position to change it. If either of these does not work, you must lean to live with it. Above all, no whinning.

Well good for you. How about this charity?
Don't whine. It makes you look bad in front of others.
