A judge on Tuesday sentenced a 19-year-old woman to 48 months' probation in connection with the death of her stepfather, Manuel Jesus Campos, on July 4, 2005.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Stacy Ratner was pleased with the sentence. The district attorney wasn't asking for prison time for Adelina Magana because of the facts in this case, she said.

"It is my belief that — after getting to know Miss Magana and getting to know the facts of this case — that she was very severely manipulated by her mother into participating in this crime," Ratner said in an interview. "She agreed to do something that in normal circumstances she never would have."

Magana's mother, Estella Magana, was found guilty by a jury in May of first-degree murder and lying in wait. A judge sentenced her on July 31 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Adelina Magana also became a key witness at her mother's trial and testified against her mother's boyfriend, Francisco "Flaco" Martinez, who stabbed Campos, 66, to death. Martinez, 41, was convicted of first-degree murder in July. He will be sentenced on Sept. 12.

After the sentencing, Ratner hugged Adelina Magana as Ratner was leaving the courtroom.

"I think I am going to cry," the teary-eyed woman told Ratner.

"Call me any time, OK?" Ratner told Adelina Magana.

Adelina Magana pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Rebecca Riley said she will get jail credit for 507 days served.

Ratner said Adelina Magana has moved on with her life. She is a full-time college student, employed and has the support of her family in Modesto.

"Unfortunately, it took an experience like this for her to realize the path that she was on," said Ratner. "She is a success story in this case."

After the sentencing, Adelina Magana said she had not talked to her mother in months but plans to visit her in prison in a few months after her mother gets "settled in."

Adelina Magana's lawyer, Richard Hanawalt, said outside the courtroom that it was a favorable outcome in this case, adding that it was very difficult for his client to testify against her mother.

"We are very content with the journey she (Adelina Magana) is now on," said Hanawalt.

According to Ratner, Estella Magana manipulated her daughter and worked with Martinez to lure Campos to a location off Olivas Park Drive as part of a ruse that Estella Magana's van had broken down. As Campos was trying to jump-start the van, Martinez came out of the bushes and attacked him.

Estella Magana hated Campos and wanted him dead, and she also wanted to keep their house, according to Ratner.
