Giants obtain minor league infielder from Dodgers
The San Francisco Giants completed their trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers when they acquired infielder Travis Denker on Sunday as the player to be named in the Mark Sweeney deal.
San Francisco sent Sweeney to the Dodgers on Aug. 9, and is 3 for 15 since joining them.
Denker has been a two-time All-Star in his five seasons in the minors. He was hitting .294 with 10 home runs and 57 RBIs for Class A Inland Empire of the California League.
Reds call up starter Shearn: Tom Shearn made his major league debut and won against the Florida Marlins for the Cincinnati Reds, who optioned reliever Kirk Saarloos to Triple-A Louisville to open a roster spot.
Shearn, a 29-year-old right-hander, grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and signed with the Reds as a free agent in 2003. He was 7-10 with a 4.20 ERA for Louisville this season.
Saarloos was called up Tuesday for his third stint with the Reds. He gave up a three-run homer during an 11-7 victory over Florida on Saturday night.
Sore back gets Young out of Rangers lineup for a two-day break: Texas Rangers shortstop Michael Young wasn't in the starting lineup because of muscle soreness in his back that has bothered the four-time All Star for more than a week.
Young will get an extended break since the Rangers have a day off at home today.
"We've got two days; no need to push that," manager Ron Washington said.
"I never thought it was anything more serious. I knew right away it was a muscle thing," Young said. "I could keep going but it makes too much sense that with two days off we can nip it in the bud."
The back was bothering Young after playing last weekend on the hard turf in the Metrodome against the Minnesota Twins, but he started the six games after that. He was replaced in the late innings of two games at Baltimore, including the record-setting 30-3 rout in Game 1 of a doubleheader Wednesday night.
Jeter sits out of Yankees starting lineup with sore knee: Derek Jeter had a sore right knee and was not in the starting lineup for the New York Yankees' game against the Detroit Tigers.
"He's just beat up right now," manager Joe Torre said. "I talked to him yesterday and said it was best for him to have a day off."
Jeter injured the knee during New York's previous series at the Los Angeles Angels. Torre said he didn't believe it was serious, but added he wasn't sure if Jeter would miss more than Sunday's game.
Jeter, who is hitting .320, had played in all but two of New York's 129 games.
Meanwhile, Yankees starter Roger Clemens, who developed a blister on his foot during Friday night's 9-6 loss to Detroit, said that the problem will not cause him to miss his next scheduled start.
