Labor Day to delay trash collection

Trash collection for customers of Harrison Industries will be delayed one day during the week of Sept. 3-9 because workers will observe the Labor Day holiday.

The regular schedule will resume the following week.

Harrison Industries serves the cities of Ventura, Ojai, Camarillo and the unincorporated area of El Rio as E.J. Harrison and Sons; Fillmore, Santa Paula and surrounding unincorporated areas as Santa Clara Valley Disposal; and Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park and surrounding unincorporated areas as Newbury Disposal.

THOUSAND OAKS

Convocation to mark start of school year

California Lutheran University will hold its opening academic convocation for the 2007-08 year at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Samuelson Chapel.

Faculty and administrators will assemble to welcome a new dean, eight new faculty members, and about 615 freshmen and transfer students. The university will recognize the presidential scholars, scholastic honor society members, students named to the provost's honor list for spring semester and honors at entrance recipients. Faculty members who have received tenure or advanced in rank will also be honored.

Joan L. Griffin, Ph.D., will be introduced as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The following new faculty members also will be presented: Ariane Balizet, English; Grady Hanrahan, chemistry; Steven Hawkins and Will Jonen, exercise science and sports medicine; Maura Martindale, School of Education; Renee Rock, School of Business; Seth Wagerman, psychology; and Don Waisanen, communication.

Chris Kimball, provost and vice president for academic affairs, will deliver the keynote address.

SIMI VALLEY

Housing Authority board seat open

The city is looking to fill one vacant seat on the board of the Area Housing Authority of the County of Ventura.

Two of the 15 commissioners are appointed directly by the Simi Valley City Council to serve four-year terms and are charged with policymaking, protection of public funds and general oversight.

The board meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the afternoon, and members are paid a stipend and mileage reimbursement for each meeting they attend. The deadline to submit applications is Sept. 10. A two-member City Council selection committee will appoint the commissioner.

Masons offer child identification service

Simi Valley Masonic Lodge No. 806 will present its child identification program Sept. 8.

The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Babies "R" Us store, 1189 Simi Town Center Way, Simi Valley.

Parents will be able to get their children fingerprinted using a clean computerized method that involves no messy ink.

No reservations are required for the free service.

MOORPARK

Mature driver class offered

An AARP Mature Driver class will be held from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sept. 4 and 5.

The class will be held in the Citrus Room, adjacent to the Moorpark Active Adult Center, 799 Moorpark Ave.

The cost is $10. Course graduates 50 and older can qualify for a discount on auto insurance.

Registrants must attend both days to get the class certificate.

VENTURA

3 restaurants join Lemon Fest event

Three area restaurants have signed on to be part of Lemon Fest, a celebration of Ventura County's lemon groves, held annually at Pacific View mall.

71 Palm, Aloha Steakhouse and Hush Restaurant & Lounge will take part in the event, which is scheduled Sept. 8-9 at the mall.

The festival, which includes live musical performances, recipe contest finals, pie-eating contests, handmade crafts for sale, games, petting zoo, free hands-on craft activities, reptile shows and lemon-themed foods, will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Proceeds support the Lemon Fest Scholarship Fund, which awards financial assistance to students studying agriculture.
