Villanova Preparatory begins $9 million fundraising effort
Villanova Preparatory School in Ojai launched a $9 million fundraising campaign amid balloons, barbecue and fanfare Friday.
Hundreds gathered in front of the Catholic coed boarding school's new entrance on Villanova Road, where Headmaster Tony Sabatino spoke to students about recent improvements, the school's future and the importance of the V9 Endowment Campaign.
The campaign hopes to raise $9 million for an endowment before 2014, the 90th anniversary of the school's founding. Interest generated by the endowment will go toward scholarships for students who need tuition assistance.
"What we've completed today sets us up in our future to serve qualified students and help families who can't afford the tuition," Sabatino said. "Now we need support from those who believe in the program."
Tuition costs $12,300 for day students and $36,200 for students who live on campus.
The school is using about 9.5 percent of its operating budget, or $650,000, for scholarships, Sabatino said. About 45 percent of the 320 students are on scholarships, he said.
Most of the students live at the school, including 85 international students from such countries as Rwanda, Taiwan, China, Korea and Mexico.
On Friday, students, staff, faculty and Ojai city officials also celebrated the completion of the school's $1.5 million improvement project, which included the new school entrance and a parking lot.
