Sprint car points leader Taylor continues quest

Greg Taylor, the Ventura Racing Association sprint car points leader, returns to Ventura Raceway tonight to continue his quest for the season championship.

Taylor has 3,290 points to lead the talented field, including No. 2 Kevin Kierce (2,945) and 2006 champion Luis Espinoza (2,815).

Eric Severson won the July 21 feature at the Ventura County Fairgrounds oval. Taylor has five wins this season and one shy of 40 career wins.

Dennis Rodriguez, Rick Hendrix, Severson and Johnathon Henry are in the top seven in points.

Steve Stasa will take a 15-point lead over Bob Alderman and Wiley Miller in the senior sprint car series. Stasa has 1,655 points.

Mike Frazier, a former VRA pony stock champion, won the Ventura County Fair racing feature in the sport compact division. Randal Dougan was second and Andrew Greiman was third. Points leader Joel Chavez (1,950) was fourth. Chavez has five victories in 2007. David Peterson is second in points with 1,595 and Dougan (1,395) is third,

Jack Parker (349 points) will be gunning to extend his IMCA modified series lead over Randy McGraw (335). Paul Stone was victorious during the fair race, which attracted 41 IMCA drivers from the Western Region.

Gates open at 3:30 p.m. and racing stars at 5:30 p.m. General admission is $14; seniors, military and students with identification cards are $11. Children ages 7-12 are $5.

Jones prevails: Norco's Tony Jones drove his fifth feature in the Lucas Oil USAC/CRA sprint car series at Perris Auto Speedway. Jones is seeking his first series championship as the series will be idle this weekend and heats up again Sept. 1 at Perris.

Santa Maria's Danny Sheridan was second. Scotty Weir of Marion, Ind., was third. Camarillo's John Ford was ninth. Garrett Hansen was the hard charger starting 16th and finished seventh.

Homecoming: Ventura's Cory Kruseman finished fourth in his heat, second in the semifinal race and 17th in the main event last Friday in the TNT Bandit sprint car series at Lakeside, Kan. Kruseman's teammate, Mike Trimble, was 12th in the feature.

Kruseman finished ninth in the main in his final TNT Sprint series race at Lakeside. He was second in his heat and won his qualifier. Kruseman finished sixth in series points.

Kruseman will be at Perris Sept. 1 and Ventura Raceway on Sept. 9.

Irwindale racing: Goleta's James Weston won his first West Coast Trucks series feature by defeating points leader Jeff Williams of Newbury Park. Santa Barbara's David Timewell was third and Ventura's Ed Cutler was seventh in the 30-lap race.

Tom Landreth of Alta Loma was victorious in the Legend Cars. Ryan Partridge of Rancho Cucamonga was second.

Woodland Hills' Nick Joanides won the Auto Club Late Models 40-lap feature. Dan DiGiamoco of Dana Point was second and Scott Jenkins of Portland, Ore., was third. Brian Jones of Thousand Oaks finished 13th. Agoura's Tim Huddleston was 17th and Jace Meier of Las Vegas fifth. Huddleston and Meier each share the points lead with 444.

Lancaster's Andrew Anderson defeated his brother, Aaron, in the Bandoleros race. Brianna Holley of Las Vegas was third.

Division leader Steve Stewart of Long Beach captured the Pick Your Parts Figure 8s. Stewart's brother, Rusty, was second and "Barefoot" Billy Zieman of Bloomington was third. Simi Valley's Don Rogers was fourth.

Racing returns today to Irwindale with the AC Delco Super Late Models, King Taco Super Trucks, Vista Paint Super Stocks, Justice Brothers Mini Stocks and BG Products Pure Stocks.

Beer will be $2 and hot dogs $1, plus there will be the NASCAR Ultimate Viewing Party live from Bristol, Tenn., on the grand vision screen watching the Sharpie 500.
