Moorpark has preseason rematch with El Camino
Revenge may be best served during the season's cold months, but the Moorpark College football team got a rare opportunity Friday in the afternoon sun at Griffin Stadium.
The first opposition with which the Raiders traded blows this season was the team which ended Moorpark's season last November — El Camino College.
"They're still big," said Moorpark receiver Conrad Meadows.
The two teams traded paint in their one official preseason scrimmage, which included one 15-minute quarter of football (El Camino won 3-0), special teams drills and a series of five untimed offensive possessions for each team.
After surviving Moorpark, 31-29, in the first round of the Southern California regional playoffs, El Camino went on to win the state championship and earn JC Gridwire's top billing as the preseason No. 1-ranked team in the nation.
No slouch itself, Moorpark, which turned the ball over on downs while searching for the game-winning score last year in Torrance, opens the season as the No. 17-ranked team in the nation.
"It's not like we wanted to beat them," said Meadows. "You want to do well because you want to compete against the best, which is what they're supposed to be."
In the day's only timed quarter of play, Moorpark failed to make a first down until less than a minute remained. Donald Senegal, one of three quarterbacks vying for the starting job, completed a swing pass to sophomore Shelton Banks for a 15-yard gain.
El Camino, behind sophomore quarterback Boo Williams, moved the ball better, but was held to a 44-yard field goal.
"I was impressed with our defense," said Moorpark coach Jim Bittner.
