Tortoise completed an impressive weekend on Sunday by winning all three races in the third running of the Battle of the Sexes, a competition between men and women. The regatta was hosted by Ventura Yacht Club.
What began as a two-boat match race four years ago has grown to a six-boat regatta, with men sailing three J-24s and women sailing three J-24s. The women made themselves proud by beating men in all three races. Every woman skipper beat men at least once.
The men prevailed 23 to 40 in a low-point scoring system. The men sailed as the Male Chauvinist Pig syndicate (MCP), while the women sailed as the We Are Woman (WAW) syndicate.
Crewing the male boats were Stan Whisenhunt, Paul Moore, Tom Ramey, Sam Martin and Pete McCutchen aboard Tortoise; Carlos Brea, Paul DeFreitas, Mike Leary, Scott Sampson and Ace Elrod aboard Radio Flyer; Dan Chepley, Dave Witham, Steve McCormick and Matt Whealon aboard Abracadabra.
Crewing the female boats were Linda Witham, Lisa Gegg, Bern Richardson, Sandi Vanni and Ceal Potts aboard Commotion; Susan Howard, Lindsey Artoff, Christina Baum, Meagan Clark and Jeanne Tanner aboard Angry Hillbillies; Sandy Sampson, Pat Ramey, Suzy Ramey, Debbie DeFreitas and Sherry Whisenhunt aboard Sneaky Pete.
