18 park upgrades, expansions approved for Simi Valley district
A dog park, an expansion of the Sinaloa Golf Course and $1 million in upgrades at the Rancho Simi Community Park are some of the top 18 projects Simi Valley residents can expect to see get under way in the next year.
"We are on a fast-track building program," said Ed Hayduk, assistant general manager of the Rancho Simi Parks and Recreation District. "A lot of these projects are set to be completed in the next one to two years."
The Park District recently approved the priorities list, which was established with community input and is considered ambitious in its scope.
A dog park was one of the most-requested items. The conceptual plan for the dog park was approved last month by the board. The proposed 3-acre park is on Lost Canyons Drive at the end of Erringer Road. It's owned by Shea Homes, which gave the city the land to build the nearby Big Sky Park softball complex.
The price tag is estimated at $500,000 and will go toward the permitting process and design consultants as well as additional parking spaces, irrigation and other landscaping, parks officials said.
An estimated $1.7 million in upgrades at the Rancho Simi Community Park are also planned. This will include design, bidding and construction of 1.4 acres of lighted tennis courts and pickleball courts. A lighted soccer field is also slated to be built on the west side of the park, at Royal Avenue and Erringer Road.
A $925,000 expansion of the Sinaloa Public Golf Course is also on the list. The nine-hole golf course on Madera Road sits on 25 acres. The district wants to expand it to 38 acres.
The Chumash Park project plans include developing park land on six acres of the 53-acre trail system. Still in the beginning stages, the $325,000 park will be built near Flanagan Drive and Broken Arrow Street.
Among some of the other 18 top projects and priorities:
n Santa Susana Park lower parking lot reconstruction. Estimated cost: $300,000.
n The Rancho Santa Susana soccer field reconstruction project. Complete reconstruction of soccer fields two and three, including installation of hybrid Bermuda turf. Estimated cost: $135,000
n The Simi Hills Golf Course. Construction of a 468-square-foot addition to the clubhouse for required kitchen storage. Estimated cost: $200,000
n Apricot pitting shed. Retrofit and restoration of the historic Apricot Pitting Shed at Strathearn Historical Park. Estimated cost: $100,000.

We need a free skateboarding park for our youth that enjoys skateboarding. Skatelab costs $10/session, and most kids don't have that kind of money to spend for everytime they want to skate. Other communities (Camarillo and Newbury Park) have dedicated space for skateboarding for FREE. We say we want our kids to exercise and get outside, well a lot like to skateboard. Lets give them a place where they can skate for free and not get hassled!!!! With all these upgrades, money and projects - it's time to consider a free skate park!!!
