Part of 118 closed earlier after accident
The westbound portion of Highway 118 from Somis to Moorpark was closed late this afternoon after a head-on collision involving two large trucks and two sedans, the California Highway Patrol said.
The CHP is reporting only minor injuries from the collision.
There was no information on how long the highway will be closed or any detours that may be set up.
The collision happened about 4:45 p.m. near Somis Road.

For local residents, it is so scary to share the road with those big trucks. From Moorpark through Somis, Highway 118 is not a real highway but a shared local. We the residents should protect ourselves by kicking off the big trucks away from 118 within residential area.

Perhaps the 118 wouldn't be so scary for the local residents if the local residents would stop blocking any and all improvements the County and State try to make.

As a recent newcomer to Moorpark, it is painfully obvious that the situation regarding truck traffic on 118 is out of control. Ive seen more craziness, 3 crashes, and dozens of near crashes on this short stretch of road in the just the last 3 months. Removing the truck traffic (except for local deliveries/pickups) of the stretch between Moorpark and Ventura would drop the traffic density substantially, and improve visibility and safety for the remaining traffic. There is no logical reason for trucks not to use 23 to the 101, to get to Ventura, or Port Heuneme, or vice versa. It also seems like the trucks go out of the way to use the 118 to avoid the Conejo grade scales on the 101.
I'm astonished this hasn't already been done. I plan on doing further investigation into the reason this simple and logical restriction hasn't been implemented. I'm assuming it's because it is a state road, and probably also due to a powerful trucking lobby. However, since I'm new to Ventura County and CA laws, I'm not certain.
If the 23 to 101 connection didn't exist, then I could understand. This situation is different. How many more people have to die because of the overloaded condition of this stretch of road? You don't need to build or widen any more roads. You just need to put a ban in place, and then assign the two CHP officers that are busy most days trying to weigh trucks at the makeshift weight stations, to patrolling the corridor to writing tickets to non-local delivery trucks. Mixing cars and trucks on freeways is bad enough. However, mixing them on an overcrowded, 2 lane, country road is nuts.
