A large majority of students in Ventura County and throughout the state are passing the high school exit exam the first time they take it, according to a report released this morning by the state Department of Education.

Statewide, about 76 percent of sophomores passed the math portion of the California High School Exit Exam this year, while 77 percent passed the English-language arts portion.

In Ventura County, 80 percent of sophomores passed the mathematics portion and 82 percent the English-language arts portion.

Students must take the California High School Exit Exam to graduate.

Data released today reflected scores from tests taken by sophomores in February, March and May.

Students take the test for the first time in their sophomore year. They also can take it twice in their junior year and three more times in their senior year.
