Ventura City Senior tourney to be Sept. 19-20

The Ventura City Senior Championships are set for Sept. 19-20 at Buenaventura Golf Course and Olivas Links. The Buena Senior Men's Golf Club is serving as host for the event. Deadline to enter is Sept. 7.

Entry forms can be picked up at either of the two participating golf courses.

Players will be assigned to flights by age and must be 55 years of age or older to play.

Each player's lowest index of July, August and September will determine handicap.

Cost to enter is $100 and includes greens fees, prize fund and box lunch the second day. Prizes will be awarded to the top one-third and ties in each flight.

Briner repeats as champ: Tyson Briner won the Bench Warmer Golf Club championship for the second straight year.

Briner finished the two-day event at 150, three shots better than runner-up Rick Cobb Jr.

Vangie Butler won the women's title with a score of 172. Butler defeated Jan Bailey, who had won the title the previous three years.

In A Flight, Gordon Fredell and Mark Tracy tied for low net at 140.

In B Flight, Jim Coultas won the title at 141, followed by Tryon Pyeatt at 142.

Billy Arnold and Don St. Clair tied for C Flight honors with a 143.

The D Flight winner was Maureen Ford with a 125, while Bruce Brackett was second at 139.

Locals compete at state: Brandon Hagy of Westlake Village and Marshall Colby of Thousand Oaks tied for 10th at the California State Junior Amateur on Aug. 12-15 at the PGA of Southern California Legends Course in Beaumont.

Hagy and Colby each finished the three-round event at 2 over. Westlake Village's Chris Russo tied for 31st at 10 over.

Justin Edwards of Westlake Village, Cole Seeger from Thousand Oaks and Kyle Holden of Simi Valley also took part in the tournament, but missed the cut after two days.

Charity golf: The fifth annual Cougar Golf Classic will be held Oct. 6 at Elkins Ranch Golf Course in Fillmore. Cost to play is $125.

The Cougar Classic is the major fundraiser for the Ventura High boys' and girls' basketball programs.

The event will feature a putting contest, closest to the pin, long drive and other special prizes. There will also be a silent auction, followed by a barbecue dinner. For non-golfers, the dinner and auction is $20.
