The network supporting Thousand Oaks' art scene is a robust if not confusing ecosystem that needs some sorting out, according to city officials.

The team of consultants hired to do the sorting met with the arts' many friends for the first time Tuesday night.

The purpose of the meeting was to acquaint the folks who make up arts related commissions, committees, boards and foundations with the consultants. Their game plan: To streamline and improve how the arts operate and exist in the city and to schedule interviews with representatives of those groups.

"We really are here to improve the ecosystem to make the arts in Thousand Oaks better," consultant David Plettner said.

He was joined Tuesday night by consultant Jerry Allen. A third consultant David Dial was not there.

The trio will be tasked with untangling the complex web of organizations that support the arts in the city. Many of groups have overlapping jurisdictions and compete for limited funding.

They will also look at ways to improve grant-writing, fundraising and marketing.

The consultants will conduct interviews with individuals from the various groups, conduct focus groups, undertake a study looking at how other cities manage their theaters and facilities and how they raise funds for them.

Dozens of arts supporters attended the meeting, including representatives attended the meeting.

The Thousand Oaks City Council voted to look for a consultant to undertake the arts audit in April. The consultants work is expected to go before council in January.
