Preparing for kindergarten
Q: My child is starting kindergarten, and we’re both a little nervous. How can I help her get off to a good start in school?
A: It’s perfectly natural to be nervous. This is a big transition for both of you, and we’re all anxious when we approach something new and unknown.
So what can you do to ease some of that anxiety? I’d start by visiting the school. That way your child can see where her classroom will be and check out the playground.
You might also want to walk to the bus stop, if she’ll be taking the bus, so she knows where she’ll be picked up and dropped off.
As you do this, you can talk about what will happen at school, so she knows what to expect.
As far as your own anxiety, how about talking with other parents who’ve been through this before? You could also plan to get involved in the classroom, so you can get to know your child’s friends and her teacher. They’ll probably be delighted to have you there.
