A 6-year-old boy was killed with a meat cleaver in a harrowing attack at an apartment complex along the 1800-block of Hillcrest Drive in Newbury Park Sunday evening.
The boy's mother was also attacked and critically injured and a 53-year-old woman who tried to stop the attack received a cut on the face.
Police arrested Calvin Leonard Sharp, 27, at the scene. He is currently in custody at Ventura County Jail on suspicion of one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder. His bail is set a $1 million.
Police have released the name of the boy's mother, Sandra Ruiz, 33, and the name of the boy killed, Sev'n Molina.
An autopsy by the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office on Monday showed the cause of death was sharp force head injuries.
The 53-year-old woman's name was not released.
Investigators are certain that the man knew the woman and boy, said Capt. Jerry Hernandez, a spokesman with the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.
Multiple witnesses at the scene this morning recounted a brutal attack that began in a first floor apartment at the complex. They outlined the attack as follows:
After an argument inside the apartment, the boy and mother ran out the door into an apartment courtyard followed by the attacker, who was wielding a foot-long meat cleaver.
The boy apparently tried to protect his mother, and the attacker began hacking at the child's head with the meat cleaver, hitting him multiple times.
Witnesses reported the attacker yelled at the child about video games while swinging the meat cleaver.
The attacker also began swinging the cleaver at the boy's mother, hitting her multiple times and nearly severing her hand and arm, witnesses said.
Another woman tried to stop the attack and she was hit in the face with the meat cleaver. Ultimately, witnesses said, she managed to get the meat cleaver out of the attackers hands. Her injury was not serious and she was treated at the hospital and released.
When police arrived, the attacker was still at the scene. Witnesses described the attacker as extremely agitated and "amped up" and was spitting at officers as they tried to arrest him.
Witnesses said the police had to use tasers multiple times to subdue him and taking him into custody.
Investigators were also trying to determine a motive for the attack, Hernandez said.
Calvin Sharp operated his cab through Yellow Cab in Camarillo. He received his business license to operate it in Thousand Oaks on April 22, 2007.
Because this was his first year operating a cab in Thousand Oaks he had to first complete a background check, which also consisted of a drug test, through the Thousand Oaks Police Department via the Department of Justice. He passed the background check on Feb 21, 2007, said Andrew Powers, the City of Thousand Oaks public information officer.
Grant Johnson, the general manager for the Westlake Village restaurant and lounge, P6, said the restaurant did a lot of business with Sharp because there aren't that many taxi companies around. Sharp, he said, also had advertising for P6 and sister steakhouse and lounge Chapter 8 on his cab.
Leonard Locher, operations manager for Yellow Cab, Ventura County, said Sharp left the company in late May early June. Locher said he believed Sharp started "his own personal limo service."
Sandra Ruiz works for Amgen in its marketing department. The attack happened right across the street from the Amgen campus.
"We are shocked and deeply saddened by this tragedy," said Amgen spokeswoman Mary Klem on Monday afternoon. "Our prayers and heartfelt sympathies are with Sandra, her family and friends."
Klem could not say how long Ruiz has worked for Amgen.

I woke up this morning and saw channel 7 and police blocking off the whole garage in my apartment complex. A neighbor told me what happened she said that it was the mother who did it b/c the husband was cheating on her and that it happened in the middle of the courtyard. Guess the neighbor got her 411 wrong. Thanks for the facts VC... but i'm with what the other comment said... "WHO IS THE GUY" cause I would like to know. Too much drama goes on in Hillcrest Park Apartments. If anyone wants to move in.... think twice bout it.

It's interesting how so many violent criminals survive their arrests these days because of the alternate types of force police have available. It wasn't too long ago that these types of incidents would have resulted in the suspect being shot and likely killed. Somewhat ironic, dead six year old and a live suspect who gets to live and spend taxpayers dollars going through the court system and likely prison. Good old California, they don't even get death if they get the death penalty.

Sometimes it seems a shame that the police have less than lethal weapons available. I would rather that they had shot this man. Justice would have been served, and the family would not have to deal with the trial, and continued agony of knowing this creep is still alive.

I am a resident at the apartment complex and am responding in part to the sad news as well as the comment about our community.
First, I am hearing that the mother may not survive the attack. Please pray for her! A memorial has been erected for the little boy. Caring neighbors are bringing flowers, balloons, stuffed animals other little gifts and lighting candles.
An eyewitness said that the woman (neighbor) who intervened was truly a hero for coming to the mother and son's aid. A male resident did run to assist her and together they helped to subdue the attacker until the police got there. That is amazing given that the police had to taser him multiple times.
I have lived at Hillcrest Park since October 2003 and find the people who live here to be friendly and caring of their neighbors. We talk to each other and watch out for each other. Random acts of violence can happen in the best neighborhoods. I will cite the Tate-La Bianca murders an an example.
Let's pull together as a community and help this mother and everyone affected by this pull through and heal.
God bless.

He is due in Courtroom #14 at 1:30 PM tomorrow. Case #2007030906. It will be interesting to see what the defense lawyers do with this one.

What a terrible tragedy. Let's not forget that this awful person was in their home just moments before the murder. WHY would a mother let someone who clearly has a drug problem into her home with a child inside?? This little boy is a hero, no doubt. But his mother should have used better judgement with who she let into her son's world. Accontability must be remembered!!
I am a resident at here and my first thought this morning is that I need to move, and quick. Then I was reminded about the murder on Malat Drive in NP a few years back, and also on Wendy Drive a year or so ago...my point is that tragedy can strike anywhere; even in the most affluent neighborhoods. I feel safe here. But then, I am not one to surround myself with drug addicts.

Is it at all possible that this terrible incident is a result of suburban building patterns? Where do people go to experience a sense of community? Where do they go to find others to blow off steam with? Where was the community the woman could turn to so that she could get away before this ever happened?
As long as we keep building areas without any central commons in miles across track home divisions we're going to have things like this happening. The social isolation imposed by suburban planning is the root cause here.

The article does not state that he was on something, granted I would have to say he most likely was. To judge the Mother at this time not knowing her or any circumstances behind the relationship of the attacker to the Mother and her son is unjust.
I my deeply heartbroken and sickened by this tragedy. Being that I too have a 6 year old son I had tears when I read this. There is no stronger relationship than that of parent and child, especially mother and child.
May God Bless this little Angel that he has called, unfortunately in such a tragic manner. Prayers are with you little one and with his mother.

The perp may be a sperm donor, but he is certainly not a parent in the true sense of the word. I don't believe that the crime is a result of suburban planning patterns. It is more likely a crime of passion, fueled by drugs. I believe that culture and values are also at play here. Did anybody see 30 Minutes yesterday evening? If so, you'll get my drift.

This is traumatizing, to learn of this horrible tragedy just now, I can't even imagine what in the world would cause anyone to lose control like that and harm a child, a young child that attempted to protect his mother. It doesn't matter the consequences, whether that man was under the influence of drugs, or just enraged, this is absolutely horrible. All crimes committed against children simply break my heart. I can't express the heartfelt sorrow that's weighing on me. I hope the family affected by this horrible situation gets the support and assistance they will need to get through this.

I also hope all of the deputies that had to be first on scene and investigate this horrible crime are doing well. The PTSD that can be cause by this type of horrific crime can stay with these deputies and sometimes causes medical retirements because of the incident. I pray for them all. The suspect can rot it hell. This is a perfect piece of garbage that belongs there. There is no forgiveness for the act this suspect did. NONE!!!

There does not seem to be a punishment to fit this crime. Calvin Sharp is without a soul; a monster. To commit such a violent act against ANYONE, let alone a 6-year old boy.
I cannot stop thinking about this. As the mother of two, very close in age to this little boy, I cannot fathom anything like this happening to them.
Burning in hell for eternity does not seem severe enough. But burn Calvin will and hopefully every day leading up to his arrival in hell will be filled with misery and agony.

First of all I think this is a total horror of a crime drugged out or not. There are not excuses anyone could ever make otherwise. This is so bad I hope he gets whatever he gets for punishment times 10. But to all those reading this who don't know this man let me tell you a little something. I knew Calvin Sharp very well. I have spent time with him many times. If I was asked by someone if he was a person I ever thought would do something like this I'd have laughed and said the pope would kill some one before Calvin would. But I guess I'm wrong, very wrong and I’m usually a great at reading people. I'm really getting to this point people. While you all are right to say anything you think about what a savage he is it goes to show (From my point of view) that just because we think we know someone doesn't mean we really know them. This guy I would say (before this attack) is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He is a give you the shirt off his back type of guy. BUT I guess that means nothing since he did what he did. We all need to be reminded that even the person who we see as a good every day citizen can be a person that has problems in their closet. So, before I get out of here I just hope we all see this as a warning that just because we think we know a person. (Drugged out or not) doesn't mean we really know them at all. It goes to show we can’t really trust anyone but our selves. I hope Calvin gets what he deserves. And that's coming from someone who knew him, or shall I say thought I knew him.

There is a "friend" on Calvin Sharp's MySpace page that says "Don't judge what u don't know"...
What is there to know that could possibly make murdering an innocent child with a 12" MEAT CLEAVER justifiable on any level? It's disturbing to think that ANYONE (even his buddies) could think of rationalizing this in any way. Scary to think that this "friend" of Calvin's is out walking among us.
I'm heartsick at the thought of what that child endured. The woman that intervened at her own peril is a true SHEro!!! Good to know that there are people in the world like her.

First off, I just want to send my prayers to the ones that lost a loved one in this terrible tragedy.
I met Calvin Sharp a couple years back, and when I heard about this, I was very shocked. I never knew him well, but I did know who he was. From the Calvin I know, he was real and spoke out on what he believed. He never seemed like the violent type, and he was always on the grind to stand on his own two feet.
There's a lot of people on here posting negative opinions about his friends and what they think about him. Let God judge him. Stating unnecessary opinions and comments will only add fuel to the fire. I'm sure a lot of people agree that what Calvin did was wrong, but please, try to refrain yourselves from judging his character and his surroundings. To every action, there are consequences.
RIP S'ven and good luck Calvin

lewisyskim, let his fellow inmates in prison judge him. The US doesn't have a legal punishment that suits this crime but the unwritten rules of California prison life will sentence him. What he did negates anything good he ever did in life. The consequences of his actions could lead to his own death sentence.

First this is a horrible tragedy and sad event. But I wonder what kind of parent gives a kid a first name with an apostrophe in it? Really
What on earth kind of name is Sev'n ? Seems like her choice of relationships isn't the only area where this women displayed incredibly bad judgement.

First of all Californian....You made me very upset because you are talking about a very good friend of mine. Only an ididot would make a comment like this at a time that I think everybody that knows about this is mourning. Second of all...before you write sh*t you don't know...research!!!!! SEV'N MEANS GOOD LUCK!!!!!!Have you been hearing about all the things people have said about Calvin? Honestly, I am blown away by the fact that nobody has said anything negative about him, not even that he ever showed any type of violence. Now...I'm pretty sure Sandra thought he was not an evil person just like his friends say so she was not displaying any bad judgment she was just being human....Nobody is perfect, but you have to be seriously deranged to commit such a heinous act...don't you think???? Actually....you Californian....you need help...It's sad that you are trying to be humorous at the wrong time. Who cares what his name was, he was her son and she took care of him and cherished him like you couldn't even imagine.

To 1openmind...no, I don't get this at all!!!!I actually wish I did, but it's not sinking in my brain. I am sure something is going to surface sooner or later. Where is the mother of his 2 children? Why hasn't she spoken yet? or maybe she has...I don't know. However, like I posted before sometimes we see things in people that are not right, but because they are dear to us we tend to overlook it. I don't know if you have kids or not, but if you do I'm sure if you were to go through something like this (god forbid) with someone else, you would probably still be in shock! You seem to be a close friend of his...so obviously you knew about his substance abuse, why didn't you get him help? When someone is on hardcore drugs , it is very obvious especially to the people that are not. I am only mentioning substance abuse because on another site someone mentioned they knew him well and they knew he had a substance abuse problem as well as domestic issues. Domestic issues usually means some type of violence occurred in that relationship. When addicts are high on whatever they get high on everything bothers them and they just want to be in their own world. I'm sure Sev'n bothered him because he mentioned something about his video games. What I don't understand is why him? Why didn't he go to his kids mom and bother her or his own kids? I'm sure she is relieved that her kids will never have to deal with his as* again because everyone claims he wasn't a violent person but, I've seen extremely violent people that would never commit such a gruesome crime like Calvin did. I am just horrified...in all the years I have not heard of something like this...yeah the OJ Simpson case was horrible, but it wasn't witnessed by other people. Calvin had no remorse...an angry person would have snapped into reality by the first sign of blood, but Calvin was beyond angry! It's not that the people on here that have been saying bad things about Calvin have hate...it's just that the crime he commited was so hateful that people, including myself, do not know how else to express themselves.
