Gibbons to end season with shoulder surgery

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Jay Gibbons will undergo shoulder surgery Tuesday, ending his worst year in the major leagues.

The former Moorpark High player has a torn labrum, which restricts his ability to throw. He is still able to swing a bat and has been used primarily as a designated hitter. Having the surgery now will enable him to return for spring training in 2008.

The 30-year-old will be placed on the disabled list after today's game or on Monday. He is batting .230 with six homers and 28 RBIs, both career lows, in 83 games.

"Well, obviously it's frustrating, this whole year, and then to have it end like this is not fun," Gibbons said Saturday. "Especially since I was having a lot of fun with the guys here, and we were playing pretty good ball as of late."

In other news, Orioles closer Chris Ray will go to Florida on Monday to begin a three-week throwing program. The right-hander has been sidelined since July 25 with a sore elbow.

Yankees' Posada misses another game with sore neck: Yankees catcher Jorge Posada was out of the lineup for the second straight game Saturday because of a sore neck, which was improving with treatment and probably won't sideline him much longer.

Yankees manager Joe Torre expected Posada back in the lineup for the final game of the Indians series today.

Polanco scratched; Tigers recall two relievers: All-Star Placido Polanco was a last-minute scratch from the Detroit Tigers' lineup Saturday night against the Oakland Athletics.

Polanco, who is one game short of Luis Castillo's major league record of 143 straight errorless games at second base, is day to day with a sore thumb. The Tigers also recalled relievers Eulogio De La Cruz and Aquilino Lopez from Triple-A Toledo to bolster an exhausted staff.
