Agoura council hopefuls enter candidacy bids

Four people met the Friday deadline to run for Agoura Hills City Council in the November election, officials said.

Two of the five council seats will be on the city ballot Nov. 6.

Incumbents John M. Edelston and Mayor Dan Kuperberg filed papers to run for new four-year terms, and Michael E. Forney and George Christopher Thomas filed to become candidates, according to the City Clerk's Office.

The paperwork submitted by Edelston and Kuperberg has been checked, and both men have qualified for the ballot, officials said Friday.

Forney's and Thomas' nomination forms still must be verified, and both could find out by early next week if they met all the requirements to become candidates.

In Westlake Village, the filing period for candidates has been extended five days because Councilman Jim Bruno, as expected, did not file to run for re-election by 5 p.m. Friday.

Bruno announced earlier this year that he would not seek another term. Two council seats will be on the November ballot. The filing period will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Incumbent Philippa Klessig, who serves as mayor pro tem, has filed to run, as have executive Ned Davis, physician Theodore Corwin and Carol Kirschbaum, a retired risk manager. All four have qualified as candidates, a city official said.

Four other potential candidates in Westlake Village have taken out nomination papers but have not yet returned them.

The filing period for school board candidates in the Las Virgenes Unified School District also has been extended until 5 p.m. Wednesday because incumbent Pat Schultz is not running for re-election. Two seats will be on the ballot.

By Friday afternoon, three candidates qualified — incumbent Terilyn Finders , business manager Jill Gaines and school-office manager Dana S. Greenspan.
