WAGS celebrates title run

The Westlake Agoura Girls Softball 16-and-under team decided it had one motto, one goal, 3-2-1.

WAGS finished third in the Western B District Tournament, second in the Southern California State and the girls wanted to celebrate a Western B National Tournament championship in Salem, Ore.

Sweeping its pool with a mercy 14-4, against hometown favorite Salem Lumbre Wildfire, and then a triple- overtime win over Northern California Cabrillo Crushers 5-4, WAGS got a first-place seed in the double-elimination bracket play. WAGS scored the most runs of all the teams in the tournament, 61, and had everyone talking.

Game 1 was against Central California Kingsburg Posse and WAGS hammered away with another mercy win 8-0 behind Rose Zeolla hitting a two-run homer over the fence. Brianna Zeolla made a great catch in right field in the final inning to help end the game.

In Game 2, WAGS played a rival Southern California Diamond Bar Elite and Brittany Oster came up with the two-run homer to start the rally. Stefany Valentino and Kathryn Klamecki pitched with precision, allowing only one walk between them. The final score was 1.

Game 3 was against Northern California Livermore Smoke. Three double plays by Kathryn Klamecki and Emily Sampson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs to help the team win 6-0 sending Livermore down to the losers' bracket.

Game 4, against the Billings Blaze from Montana, was a similar story as the girls collected eight hits for five runs against one of the best pitchers in the tournament giving WAGS another victory. Klamecki drove in three runs and Ciara Zeolla started an 8-6-2-5 double play from center field. The final score was 5-2.

Game 5 was one of the toughest, against Oregon's Lake Oswego Renegades as it had great pitchers as well, but once the hitting started, the rhythm kept going as WAGS pounded out 10 more hits to win 7-2. Kelli Barmasse pitched a complete game, allowing only one walk. Alison James was catching and had two putouts at home to kill a rally and end the game.

WAGS advanced to the Championship game. Oregon's Lake Oswego beat Washington's Bellevue Blast 2-1 to earn its rematch against the WAGS girls for the championship game.

The final game had all the components: rhythm, speed, hitting, fielding and pitching. It all came together just as planned. The hard work and dedication to each other and the chemistry of the team was the reason for their success. Diving catches, double plays, pitching, stealing, and fake plays all looked easy as WAGS dominated the entire game and won 5-0. Hall and Nicole Werdesheim combined for three RBIs to help take the lead and secure the victory. Valentino was the winning pitcher.

After being upset in the district tournament because of a few players missing from the lineup, including one pitcher, and a heartbreaking loss in the state championship game to Riverside, the WAGS girls wanted nothing less than the national title. Dedication from every player was essential to their success, including the coaching staff.

The players are Ciara Zeolla, center fielder; Werdesheim, third base; Klamecki, second base and pitcher; Rose Zeolla, catcher; James, right fielder and catcher), Valentino, pitcher and left fielder; Brittany Oster, shortstop, third base and left field; Brett Hall, shortstop; Sampson, first base; Barmasse, pitcher and left fielder; and Brianna Zeolla, base runner.

Mark Zeolla is the manager. The coaches are Stefan Valentino, Jeff Klamecki, Donn James and Dina Barmasse.

Blast finishes fifth: The SoCal Blast 12-and-under team went 8-2 to take fifth place out of 38 teams representing seven states at ASA Western Nationals in Portland, Ore.

The Blast won its pool and was defeated in the second round of bracket play.

The Blast bounced back to win five games back to back before earning a fifth-place trophy.

Makayla Webster also took second place in the home run derby against 72 other hitters.

Blast players include pitchers Kelsey Phipps, Shelby Jacobson, Hannah Roberg and Madison Wolfe. The other players are Lili Georges, Cristine Wood, Haleigh Damron, Sami Hernandez, Sissy Garcia, Julie Castro, Webster and Allie Eason.
