AGOURA

Rotary Club holds breakfast meeting

The Rotary Club of Agoura Hills/Oak Park will have a breakfast meeting from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Brent's Deli, 2799 Townsgate Road, Westlake Village.

Ashish Vaidya of California State University Channel Islands will discuss economic globalization.

Club members will discuss coming community service and fundraising events. The club seeks new members and welcomes guests.

CAMARILLO

Poinsettia Painters meeting set

Ventura County chapter of Society of Decorative Painters will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Orchid Building, UFCW Local Union Hall, 816 Camarillo Springs Road, Camarillo.

The chapter is providing prepared brushes to decorate and take home, which are intended to be a muse to paint and create. A set of the newest Delta colors is available to share. A total of 19 will be raffled at the end of the night.

Door prizes and refreshments are planned, along with a chance to sign up for upcoming paint-ins and seminars.

OXNARD

Flea market to benefit Golden Eagles

The Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 232 in Oxnard is having its annual parking lot flea market from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 4684 Saviers Road.

Vendors can rent space and tables. There will be walk-in bingo, snacks and drinks.

Navy Yacht Club announces cleanup

The Navy Yacht Club Channel Islands will hold its annual Channel Islands Harbor CleanUp and general meeting Aug. 19 at Peninsula Park in Oxnard. The cleanup will be at 10 a.m., and the meeting will be at noon.

The club is open to members of all branches of the military (active duty, honorably discharged and retired), military reserves and guards, and Homeland Security forces.

PORT HUENEME

Submarine group to meet Aug. 19

The Submarine Veterans of WWII and USSVI Parche Base of Ventura County will meet at the Naval Base Ventura County in Port Hueneme. The daughters of the Submarine Veterans also are hosting a Santa Maria-style picnic barbecue at Bolles Field at noon Aug. 19.

Soda and beer will be provided; everyone is welcome to bring and share a favorite dish.

All submariners and their families, including children and grandchildren, are welcome. If you do not have a decal for access to the Navy base, your name must be on a visitors list. Enter the base through the Sunkist Gate off Ventura Road in Port Hueneme.

SIMI VALLEY

Democratic Club to discuss impeachment

The Simi Valley/Moorpark Democratic Club will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room of the Simi Valley Library.

The club will hold a discussion on the pros and cons of impeachment. The featured speaker will be Peter Thottam, a key member of the Los Angeles National Impeachment Center.

Astronomical society meets Aug. 17

The Ventura County Astronomical Society will hold a meeting at 7:30 p.m Aug. 17 in the Multi-Purpose Room at Mesa Union School, 3901 Mesa School Road, Somis.

Richard Ellis, professor of astronomy at CalTech, will give his presentation, "Cosmic Dawn: The Quest to Find the Earliest Galaxies."

THOUSAND OAKS

Group to hold its annual gathering

The Conejo Valley Genealogical Society Inc. will hold its annual gathering from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Grant R. Brimhall Library, 1401 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.

Members will share genealogical happenings of the previous year and have ice cream. Now is the time to come forward with discoveries, triumphs, disappointing results and seemingly closed doors. Bring one "treasure" to share: a name, an heirloom, a Web site, a new relative, a new research technique, etc. Members are encouraged to bring finger foods or cookies, and board members will bring ice cream toppings.

Encore Club announces luau

The Conejo Valley Encore Club will hold its luncheon and general meeting from noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Thunderbird Oaks Mobile Home Community Club House in Thousand Oaks.

The event will be a luau, with a buffet catered by Hawaiian BBQ.

The cost is $13, which includes the buffet lunch, dessert and nonalcoholic beverages, along with a few other surprises.

VENTURA

Bass Club to discuss tournament results

The Ventura County Bass Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carrow's Restaurant, 2401 E. Harbor Blvd, Ventura.

Results of the club's night tournament at Lake Casitas will be discussed, with the winners discussing their lures, presentations and patterns. A discussion will be held on winning late-summer patterns in anticipation of the club's tournament at The Delta on Sept. 21-23.

The Bass Club is sponsoring 12 catch-and-release tournaments this year, three of which are team-draw tournaments.

Aglow meeting planned for Aug. 15

The Ventura Aglow Community Lighthouse will meet at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the living room of the South Coast Fellowship Church, 3050 Market St. The living room is located on the Walter Street side of the building.

The speaker this month will be Rosemary Diaz, known as the "Flag Lady." Diaz is a graduate of world-reaching Faith School of Ministry in Ventura and holds a current ministry license. She has written a book, "My Banner," about the use of flags during praise and worship. Her ministry is expanding to include praise and worship services.

The meeting is open to both men and women. A light brunch will be served. For more information and to make reservations, call 483-3103 by Monday.

Rotary Ventura-East meets today

The Rotary Club of Ventura-East will hold its meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. today at the Poinsettia Pavilion, 3451 Foothill Road, Ventura.

The meeting will feature a presentation by Dan Uhlar on the Ventura County Ombudsman Program.

The club also announced that at its annual recognition dinner for new president, Joe Amandoli, it learned about the list of awards garnered for the 2006-2007 year.

Outgoing president Bob Pazen announced that Ventura East had achieved one of the rare and most difficult club honors as "Super Club" for District 5240 of Rotary International. Other awards announced were Presidential Citation from Rotary International, Governor's Super Club, Significant Service Award, Club Service, Community Service, Vocational Service and International Service

Ventura East Breeze Editor Jeff Hata was Rotarian of the Year, and Nikki Sloan was Rookie of the Year.

Senate to speak at Lions' meeting

The Ventura Downtown Lions Club will meet at noon Aug. 16 at the Derby Club at the Ventura County Fairgrounds at Harbor Boulevard and Figueroa Street, Ventura.

The guest speaker will be Richard Senate, presenting a program about longtime Ventura lawyer Earle Stanley Gardner, the noted author of the "Perry Mason" novels. In addition to being a local lawyer and famous author, Gardner was a charter member of the Ventura Downtown Lions Club.

Freethinkers to hear from professor

The Freethinkers of Ventura County will hold a meeting 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Topping Room of the E.P. Foster Library, 651 E. Main St., Ventura.

William Fox, a professor of biology at Ventura College, will discuss his experiences in Ecuador and Borneo.

There will be a potluck, and members will play orchid bingo to win live orchids or orchid-related prizes.
