Marlins designate Borchard for assignment
MIAMI — Joe Borchard's time with the Florida Marlins appears to have ended, after the team designated the former Camarillo High standout for assignment on Wednesday.
Borchard was in his second season with the Marlins, who signed him early in the 2006 season after he was released by the Seattle Mariners.
By designating Borchard for assignment, the team has 10 days to trade him or Borchard can be assigned to one of the Marlins' minor league clubs.
Borchard had a fairly successful 2006 season with Florida, serving as both a pinch hitter and a spot starter.
At the start of the 2007 season he got the chance to play every day when right fielder Jeremy Hermida got hurt in spring training. But Borchard struggled as a starter, hitting just .203 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 42 games. He was batting just .196 in 85 games when he was released on Wednesday.
His spot on the roster will be filled by Alejandro De Aza, who missing nearly four months with an ankle injury.
De Aza started on opening day and batted .303 in nine games before being sidelined.
