Surgeon surrenders in organ harvest case

A transplant surgeon charged with committing crimes during a failed effort to harvest organs from a donor surrendered to police and was released early Wednesday after posting $10,000 bail.

Dr. Hootan Roozrokh, 33, of San Francisco, will be arraigned Aug. 14.

Prosecutors this week accused Roozrokh of prescribing excessive drugs in an attempt to hasten the death of a disabled patient, Ruben Navarro of Oxnard. He is charged with three felony counts and faces up to eight years in prison if convicted.

Not guilty pleaded in death, child abuse

A woman accused of abandoning three babies — one of whom died of exposure in the back of a pickup truck — pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder and child-abuse charges.

Nancy Ortiz, 22, of Orosi, entered her plea to one count of murder and three counts of child abuse.

Authorities believe Ortiz left her newborn daughter to die in the bed of a truck in December, after also abandoning the baby's two older siblings as infants in her neighborhood.

The first two babies were found alive and have since been placed with families.

Highway reopens after overpass fall

Crews reopened a state highway Wednesday that had been blocked for a day after steel supports for a new overpass collapsed, while investigators studied why the structure toppled.

A construction worker who fell 50 feet to the ground with a tumbling steel beam remained hospitalized in fair condition at Enloe Regional Medical Center in Chico.

Jeffrey Doll, 39, of Olivehurst, suffered a fractured pelvis, left elbow and lower left leg in the collapse.
