MLB notes: Prior undergoes shoulder surgery

Prior undergoes shoulder surgery

Mark Prior had exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his injured right shoulder Tuesday, and it was unclear how long the Cubs pitcher would be sidelined.

The team had no immediate information on the procedure, performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham.

Cardinals ace begins throwing program: St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter played catch for the first time in two weeks, testing an elbow injury that has sidelined him since the season opener.

Carpenter, a 15-game winner last year and the NL Cy Young winner in 2005, made about 45 throws from flat ground while gradually increasing the distance to 120 feet. If all goes well he'll play catch today, more long toss on Thursday, and then throw off a mound on Saturday.

Team medical personnel are hopeful rest and therapy will allow Carpenter to get through the season without surgery.

Orioles' Williamson sidelined: Baltimore Orioles right-hander Scott Williamson was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of tightness in his right triceps tendon.

Rockies put Hawkins on DL, activate Martin: Reliever LaTroy Hawkins was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Colorado Rockies, who activated reliever Tom Martin from the DL.

Iwamura out 4-6 weeks: Tampa Bay's Akinori Iwamura was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right oblique strain that will sideline the former Japanese League star 4-6 weeks.
