Centenarian is feted during birthday month
Edith Bartholomew had the birthday celebration that kept on going.
Bartholomew, who turned 100 on March 8, was presented with a series of parties and cakes throughout the month by members of her family. A highlight was a visit from her son, Jerry, who lives in Lexington, Okla.
Bartholomew is a resident of the Manor of Ojai, an assisted-living facility.
She was born in Chattanooga, Okla., and is the last surviving sibling in a family of 11. She married William Earl Bartholomew on March 7, 1926, and had five children: Katherine, Betty, Judy, Tommy and Jerry. In 1937, the couple moved to Ojai, to be near family, and they lived in the Oak View area for the next 36 years.
Bartholomew was a stay-at-home mom who made the best fried chicken her family and friends ever tasted for the regular Sunday dinner at her home.
She and her husband loved to travel, and they returned to Oklahoma almost every summer to visit with their extended families.
Along the way they stopped at all the different attractions along old Route 66.
After the death of her husband of 53 years, Bartholomew moved to Ventura to be near her children, and she lived by herself until the age of 95.
She always had a suitcase packed in case one of her children would take her gambling or elsewhere.
The centenarian has seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren who live in all parts of the United States.
