Oxnard pushes Moorpark back
Raiders' playoff hopes take another hit with third loss in last four
The Oxnard College baseball team turned the tables to serve up a plate of hemlock to Moorpark's Western State Conference aspirations.
Two days after Moorpark turned a 4-1 deficit into a 7-4 win, host Oxnard repeated the same trick, 7-4, as pitcher Andrew Pluta pitched a complete game and second baseman Jared DeCamp paced a five-run seventh inning with the game-winning RBI single.
"It was a reversal of fortune," said Oxnard coach Jon Larson.
The result pushed Moorpark (20-15, 10-8) four games behind WSC North leader Santa Barbara City, which defeated Ventura 10-0. A slide of three losses in four games is now threatening the Raiders' playoff hopes.
"That's what I told the team," said Moorpark coach Mario Porto. "We have a chance to make the postseason. ... It's all up to you."
Porto was dismayed by his team's fielding.
"They only had us for one error, but we probably made three that cost us four runs," said Porto.
Moorpark starter David Goodenough (5-5) took a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning, but walked in a run in the sixth and allowed surrendered the lead to the Condors in the seventh.
DeCamp and catcher Keith Garcia delivered bases loaded singles and shortstop Aaron Breslin was hit by a pitch to give Oxnard a 7-4 lead.
"I was just trying to hit the ball hard somewhere," said DeCamp.
Oxnard (16-21, 6-12) has been in freefall since shortstop Joey Siddons broke a hand last month while leading the WSC in hitting.
But the two players most affected by his injury, Breslow, who moved over from second base to shortstop, and DeCamp, who was thrust into the lineup, had big days Thursday.
Breslow had three of Oxnard's first six hits, including the third-inning RBI double that got the Condors on the board.
DeCamp put them on top to stay.
"We can't change anything that's happened so far," said DeCamp. "We can just move forward and try to win games."
Moorpark jumped out to a 4-1 lead through five innings as center fielder Nick Pinneri led off the first and third innings with singles and was driven in by cleanup hitter Dylan Gaughen.
Gaughen, a right-handed hitter, went to the right side in both situations, lining a single to right field in the first and grounding out to second in the third.
RBI singles by infielder Paul Olson and right fielder Eric Blackwell pushed the Raiders ahead 4-1 after five innings.
But Pluta only seemed to get stronger from there, allowing three hits and no runs after the fifth inning. Moorpark led two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth.
"I hope this pulls the team together and we can win more together," said Pluta. "It feels real good."
In the other dugout, Gaughen said he didn't feel like Moorpark had hit the skids.
"We don't get on a roller coaster, as a team," said Gaughen. "Hopefully, we'll take this loss and respond."
