MRI on Pavano reveals elbow strain; Sanchez has elbow surgery
New York Yankees starter Carl Pavano has a mild strain in his right elbow and is expected to begin throwing off flat ground within the week.
Pavano had an MRI exam Thursday that revealed the strain. The right-hander was placed on the disabled list Sunday, retroactive to April 10.
Another injured Yankees pitcher, right-hander Humberto Sanchez, had elbow ligament-replacement surgery Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season.
Hernandez to miss at least two starts: Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez will likely miss two to three starts with a muscle strain inside his right elbow and forearm.
Mariners medical director Dr. Ed Khalfayan said if Hernandez continued to pitch with the strain, he could have stressed the elbow so severely he would have required elbow-ligament replacement surgery.
Philadelphia's Howard out with leg injury: Ryan Howard sat out Philadelphia's game because of a left leg injury that's expected to sideline him at least one more game.
The reigning NL MVP hurt himself running out a fielder's choice grounder in the 10th inning Wednesday night.
Hunter still out of the Twins' starting lineup: Torii Hunter remained out of the Minnesota Twins' starting lineup against Seattle for the second consecutive game because of a bruised shoulder. The star center fielder, off to a hot start, hoped to return either today or Saturday at Kansas City.
Lopez placed on 15-day DL: Right-hander Rodrigo Lopez was put on the 15-day disabled list by the Colorado Rockies because of tightness in his right elbow. The Rockies filled his roster spot by purchasing the contract of right-hander Matt Herges from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Rangers, Red Sox swap minor league pitchers: The Texas Rangers and Red Sox swapped minor league pitchers, with left-hander Daniel Haigwood going to Boston for right-hander Scott Shoemaker and cash.
Correction: In Thursday's report on Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle's no-hitter, The Associated Press erroneously reported that David Cone pitched the last no-hitter against the Texas Rangers on June 17, 1995. The last no-hitter against the Rangers was Mike Witt's perfect game on Sept. 30, 1984.
