NBA notes: McHale, Wittman will return to Timberwolves

McHale, Wittman will return to Timberwolves

They wore bags on their heads and carried signs that read, "Fire McHale!"

The Minnesota Timberwolves fans who want Kevin McHale out are becoming more and more vocal, and some turned out to express their displeasure at the season finale.

But McHale isn't going anywhere.

McHale said Thursday he will return as vice president of basketball operations next season and plans on bringing star Kevin Garnett and coach Randy Wittman back with him.

"I don't want to walk away with the team in this state," said McHale, who said this year's team resembled the "dysfunctional" squad he inherited when he was named vice president in 1995.

Musselman's future in doubt as Kings finish worst season in nine years: Eric Musselman was hired to coach the Sacramento Kings when the team decided that eight straight playoff appearances weren't enough to save Rick Adelman's job.

After failing to take the Kings to the postseason in his first year at the helm, Musselman's job is already in jeopardy.

Following the earliest ending to a season in Sacramento in nearly a decade, Musselman and team president Geoff Petrie are set to begin evaluations of what went wrong this season.

NBA sets attendance record for third straight season: The NBA broke its attendance record for the third straight year, drawing more than 21.8 million fans during the 2006-07 season.

The league also surpassed its previous best by averaging 17,757 fans. The previous best marks were set last season, when the average of 17,558 fans led to a total of just under 21.6 million.

The top three teams in average attendance are all from the Central Division: Chicago (22,253); Detroit (22,076), and Cleveland (20,436).
