Wohlstattar named Moorpark boys' coach
Moorpark High didn't travel very far to find its new boys' basketball coach.
Athletic Director Rob Dearborn just raided the girls' team room.
Deciding to keep the job in house, Moorpark announced the hiring of Adam Wohlstattar to fill the boys' position on Wednesday.
Wohlstattar, 30, has spent the last three seasons as the girls' varsity head coach.
"It wasn't any easy decision. But for me, it was about taking on a new challenge," Wohlstattar said. "It is good to know I will help my school while fulfilling a goal I had about being a boys' coach in this league."
Wohlstattar, an algebra teacher on campus, replaces Tim Bednar, who resigned after 18 seasons at Moorpark.
Wohlstattar has plenty of Marmonte League experience with the boys.
He played at Thousand Oaks High, received his first coaching job with the Thousand Oaks frosh-soph team and was the JV coach at Moorpark for four seasons before taking the girls' job.
Wohlstattar, the president of the Ventura County Basketball Coaches Association, finished 54-30 in his three seasons with the girls' team.
The Musketeers captured a co-league title this season, and Wohlstattar was named the league's co-coach of the year.
From being in the same gym to wearing similar uniforms, Wohlstattar doesn't expect any major changes in his new job.
"When I bring them into the huddle, the guys aren't going to smell as good as the girls," Wohlstattar said. "Guys stink and girls smell pretty. But other than that, it should be a smooth transition."
Having spent the last few weeks trying to fill the boys' position, Dearborn will immediately have to fill another. The deadline to apply for the girls' opening closes on May 2.
"We are excited that Adam is able to open a new chapter in his life, and we believe he is going to do a great job," Dearborn said. "It is fun to get a young guy who is really enthusiastic in charge of our program."
