SKATEBOARDING

AGOURA WINS COMPETITION

The Agoura Chargers prevailed in the first competition of the California High School Skateboard Club on Sunday at Skatelab in Simi Valley. Senior Josh Krakover had a flawless run, said judge Steve Badillo. He used his street course with consistency and style. Ryan Klass and Travis Meador skated well as Agoura scored 23.9 points to edge Santa Monica 23.6. Westlake was third with a 22.6 score. Oak Park was fourth at 20.6, followed by Simi Valley (19.2), Royal (18.2) and Newbury Park (15.6). Jeff Stern, founder of the club, was elated with the opening day. "In a million years I would have never imagined the day going so well," said Stern. The event received television coverage from Fox Sports Net and Time Warner Cable. Stern said all the skaters were cheering each other on. Stern said 75 spectators were on hand. The next competition will be May 12 at Skatelab. WEST VALLEY WINS STATE TITLE

The West Valley Wolves Squirt A team, based in Panorama City, and comprised of talented 1996 and 1997 birth-year players, captured the California Amateur Hockey Association State Championship (CAHA) title, which took place in San Jose over the weekend. The Wolves players who had standout performances throughout the playoffs include Connor Chilton (Oak Park), Trent Dolabson (Oak Park), Pat Newell (Thousand Oaks), Adam Papayoanou (Valencia), Ethan Somoza (Simi Valley), Evan Somoza (Simi Valley) and Ryan Tait (Santa Clarita). The Wolves finished the season with a 50-5-2 record and were the No. 1 seed from Southern California. The Wolves opened play with a 2-2 tie against a stubborn San Jose Junior Sharks team and then would go on to defeat the Oakland Bears 4-1. In their last round-robin game, the Wolves defeated the Junior Ducks by a score of 9-0 to advance to the championship game against the same Anaheim Junior Ducks Team. The Wolves fell behind to a very determined Ducks team early in the game and going into the middle of the third period still trailing by a score of 2-0, Ryan Tait of Santa Clarita and Patrick Newell of Thousand Oaks scored comeback goals to tie the game in regulation and force overtime. In the overtime period, Ethan Somoza of Simi Valley would score the game winning goal and the Wolves would go on to secure the California State Championship Title. During the season, the Wolves compiled an impressive list of accomplishments that include: Early Bird Tournament Champions, Chicago Chill third overall (first-place U.S. Team), Toast of the Coast Pee Wee A champions, Pikes Peak finalist, Southern California regular-season champions, Southern California playoff champions and California State champions.

The Wolves include Max Blitz, Chilton, Trent Dolabson, Coby Downs, Manny Mancha, Aaron Murray, Kevin Morisako, Patrick Newell, Gavin Nieto, Adam Papayoanou, Ethan Somoza, Evan Somoza, Ryan Tait and Evan Zytowski. Head coaches are Peter Torsson and Jocelyn Langlois. Tom Nieto and Steve Papayoanou are assistant coaches.

VIPERS PREVAIL

Jim Brady Memorial Classic at Bakersfield

Highlights: Ventura The under-12 Vipers won the tournament championship with four victories. The Vipers allowed only one goal on a penalty kick and converted 16 goals, John O'Brien is the coach. The players are Natalie Waechter, Nicole O'Brien, Baylee Valdez, Janine Raduechel, Julianna Garibay, Emily Rau, Alyssha Hernnandez, Miranda Campos, Sasha Shapiro and Becca Blevins. This was the first tournament the girls played as under-12 Viper.

SOFTBALL

ST. BONAVENTURE WINS THREE GAMES

Highlights: St. Bonaventure Winning pitcher Christina Garvin recorded seven strikeouts in the 10-4 opening win over San Marcos. Garvin contributed a double and a single. Katrina Gutierrez registered 14 strikeouts in the 6-3 nightcap win against San Marcos. Mariya Del Rio had four hits. Kalyn Drew, Garvin and Courtney Therrien had two hits. Garvin recorded nine strikeouts in a 7-2 win over Santa Clara. Drew hit a homer, triple and single. Drew had drove in two runs. Therrien had a triple, single and two RBIs.

BUENA 12, VENTURA 8

Highlights: Buena Danielle Markmann had two hits, including a homer. Brystal Hood had four hits.Mariah Flores had a triple, homer and a single. Elise Munoz added a triple and a single. Brooke Keeter had a double and a single. Mel Gray pitched 3 1/3 innings for the win and Tracy Molina pitched the final 2 2/3 innings. Keyera Albright was the catcher. Ventura Jenniscia La Rosa pitched six innings to complete the game. Shannon McClain had four hits, including two doubles, triple, single and two RBIs. Jennifer Swift had two hits including a triple and two RBIs. Cynthia Montanez had a hit which scored two. Sarina Barrios added a triple. Rhonica Rubio, Izamar Avila, Inga Dahlstedt and De La Rosa each had a hit.

Ventura GOES 1-2

Highlights: Ventura Jennisica De La Rosa pitched five innings for the 14-2 win over Oxnard. De La Rosa allowed two runs on seven hits and recorded four strikeouts. De La Rosa also contributed three hits. Izamar Avila had three hits including a double an RBI and two stolen bases. Jennifer Swift had two hits including a triple and two RBIs. Inga Dahlstedt had two hits and four RBI's. Sarina Barrios, Cynthia Montanez, and Amber Kingsley all chipped in with a hit and an RBI. Oxnard won the nightcap 11-4. Ventura's Sarina Barrios had two hits. Montanez had a double. Tiffany Godfrey added a single.

Record: Ventura 7-6, 3-2 Channel League.

SIMI VALLEY WINS

Highlights: Simi Valley Chelsea Lovelace tripled with two RBIs in a 6-2 win over Royal. Hillary Burlew, Kellie Spector and Ali Vorgitch each hit doubles. Ashley Hayes hit two homers and drove in five runs as the Pioneers routed Calabasas 38-2. Stephanie Cook had a double and two RBIs. Spector had a triple and Burlew had a double.

OAK PARK 8, OAKS CHRISTIAN 2

Highlights: Oak Park Jenna Blumenfeld pitched well. Brett Hall had two hits, including a triple and one RBI. Nicole Werdesheim had three hits and one RBI. Rebecca Varley had three hits, includinga home run and two RBIs. In the field, Varley had four assists. Alison James had two hits. Hailey Ashley had 13 putouts and one RBI.

Record: Oak Park 14-1, 4-0 Tri-Valley League.

WATER POLO

FLACKS CORRECTION

Agoura High junior Casey Flacks started her career with the Harvard Water Polo Foundation, under coach Rich Corso, and then played for the Los Angeles Water Polo Club. Flacks has never been a member of the South Coast Water Polo Club, which was reported on April 10. Flacks was co-MVP of the Marmonte League and CIF-Southern Section Division II MVP. Flacks is a third-year varsity player for Coach Jason Rosenthal.
