Judge rules enough evidence for trial in Marmo murder

A judge ruled today there was evidence to put three Seabees from Naval Base Ventura County on trial for the slaying of a Camarillo man last year.

Rebecca Braswell, 26; Shannon Butler, 23; and Matthew Toerner, 20, are charged with murdering John Marmo on Dec. 1 outside his Camarillo townhouse. Braswell was Marmo's ex-wife, and the two had a bitter divorce and custody battle over their 4-year-old daughter.

During a preliminary hearing this week in Ventura County Superior Court, numerous witnesses testified about the killing and events leading up to it. Several Navy Seabees testified that Butler had approached them or others about beating up, injuring or killing Marmo.

At the hearing's conclusion today, Judge John Dobroth ruled there was enough evidence to hold the trio over for trial on murder charges.

A preliminary hearing for a fourth Seabee suspect, Seth Hardy, hasn't been scheduled.

I am following this story not just because of the sadness involved, but one of the suspects is from Laguna Hills, CA. That's too close to home. In the article "3 Seabees must stand trial for man's death" John Marmo was shot in the back. Does this bother anyone else? I don't see "self defense" here or "protecting Butler" from John Marmo.
