Lady at the Helm is a teen dream
A 13-year-old stole the spotlight Saturday as Channel Islands Yacht Club hosted its Lady at the Helm race.
Dorian Edwards skippered her grandfather Kevin Dickman's Cal 25, Zuma Jay, to victory in Class Be, winning by almost seven minutes in a nine-mile race.
In Class A, Roxanne Vetesse scored yet another victory aboard Rod Abbott's Choate 48, Funatic. Vetesse has been a big winner in the past in Ventura Yacht Club's Gal & Guy Series. She won by more than seven minutes over an 18-mile course.

Perennial fleet champ Deke Klatt is off and rolling again in the 2007 Fleet 145 J-24 championship series. He sailed to victory in all three races Saturday, easily winning the third regatta of the year. He missed the opening regatta, which was won by Dave Witham in Commotion.
On Saturday, Commotion placed second and holds a slight mathematical edge over Klatt's Jaded in the series. The next regatta will be on May 20.

Upcoming sailboat races:
n Saturday, Channel Islands to Newport Race. Hosted by Anacapa Yacht Club, this is a popular feeder race for the world famous Ensenada Race. The skippers' meeting will be Friday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. Entry fee is $30. It is a pursuit (reverse handicap) start, with the highest rated boats in each class to start about 10 a.m. Skippers can find the time of their starts after 10:05 a.m., by calling the race committee on VHF channel 68.
n Saturday, May 5, Bob Cooke Memorial Double Handed Series 2. Hosted by Channel Islands Yacht Club, this series honors the memory of longtime racing sailor, Bob Cooke, who died last year. Entry fee is $30 ($25 for USSA members). The skippers' meeting will be at 9 a.m. and the race will begin at noon. For more information, contact Colleen Nix at 407-9764, or Sue Johnson at 573-7810.
