Chumash donate $44,000 for Santa Paula Hospital beds
Santa Paula Hospital will add five "Stryker frame" hospital beds to its intensive care unit thanks to a donation from the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.
Stryker frame beds are on a circular frame so that patients can be rotated easily, even upside-down, to prevent bed sores and aid in treatment. The tribe, through its philanthropic foundation, donated $44,000 to the nonprofit Santa Clara Valley Wellness Foundation for the purchase of the beds.
Foundation and tribal officials were on hand for a ceremony Wednesday to acknowledge the donation. Tribal elders pledged the gift during a fundraising gala in December. The tribe also provided $10,000 in sponsorship for the gala.
The combined contributions made up more than half of the $100,000 raised that night for capital equipment purchases for the hospital, said Martha Rea, past president of the foundation.
The foundation is the hospital's philanthropic arm, but it also provides money for other healthcare-related services in the Santa Clara Valley.
