Lanes, restaurants closed in Ventura after main break

Part of Main Street is closed between Callens and Telephone roads in Ventura and water is cut off to 15 restaurants today as city crews repair a broken water main, officials said.

No homes lost water service because of the break, but some restaurants in the affected area had to close.

The break in the cast-iron pipe was reported about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Jim Passanisi, the city's water superintendent. Corrosion caused the break, he said.

At 11 a.m. today, crews were still working to fix the broken 20-foot section of pipe. Passanisi estimated the repair work would be done by 5 p.m.

Water service should be restored at that time, and restaurants will be able to reopen, he said.

The closed lanes of Main Street will not reopen until at least 8 p.m., however, because crews need to fill in the area around the pipe.

Representatives from the city Public Works Department are visiting businesses to assess the impacts. Officials expected to install portable bathrooms at Lassen's Health Foods and the Target shopping center.

Actually, the article says "At 11 a.m. today, crews were still working ..." so it's hard to say when they started working.

it's not as if this is an easy fix. give them a break. a 20 foot section of water pipe isn't just something you can seal with a piece of gum.
