Police arrest suspect in assault after chase
An Oxnard man was arrested on suspicion of battery and assault with a deadly weapon after he got stuck in traffic while fleeing officers, police said Tuesday.
The incident began when Oxnard police received a call at 2:38 p.m. Monday about a domestic dispute on the 1600 block of Pamela Street in Oxnard. Dontay Douglas Downs, 27, battered a 19-year-old Oxnard woman, police said.
A 52-year-old Oxnard man came to her aid, and as police arrived, Downs drove off, hitting both individuals with his car, police said.
The woman suffered moderate injuries and was taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. The man was treated at the scene.
Police pursued Downs for eight minutes and arrested him after he got bogged down in traffic on the 100 block of Princeton Avenue.
Downs, who recently moved to Oxnard from Missouri, was booked into Ventura County Jail. He is facing charges including assault with a deadly weapon and battery in connection with Monday's incident. He is also wanted on felony charges in Missouri, said Cmdr. Steve Blanchard.
