Your letters: Port Hueneme Tower Proposal

Build the tower

We are property owners in Surfside III, Port Hueneme. We have attended every meeting held regarding Pacific Pointe at Port Hueneme. Without reservation, we absolutely support the building of this world-class resort.

Our community desperately needs this revenue and this new life brought into the area.

We feel that this will be an endeavor of class and consideration and we feel it is our best chance to bring an end to the city deficit, as well as the "pay-by-the-hour" hotels and gang problems in the area.

We do not feel safe walking along the streets or the beach in the daylight, let alone in the evenings. The murder on our beach a month or so ago is a prime example of how miserable our community has become.

We want the towers, we want the hotel to be removed, we want decent shopping and restaurants, we want to bring our little area up to a new standard of living.

Please allow Pacific Pointe at Port Hueneme to be built.

Save Hueneme Beach

I participated in four meetings held by "Pacific Pointe at Port Hueneme" marketing team March 17 through April 14. During that time period, I also reviewed its 79-page Ernst & Young report on file in the city office.

Following are my observations and comments:

The would-be developers and speaker were well-prepared. Any "problems" that might be encountered during construction and operation of the proposed tower were noted to be solvable by demonstrated technology, or, when appropriate, mitigated.

The Ernst & Young report was identified as the document providing facts and data confirming the viability of the proposed tower program. Although a good source of comparative hotel financial data, the report does not present any useful information related to probable specific participation by the traveling community to this hotel.

Most assuredly, we have a pleasant beach, but not one with a favorable water temperature to induce recreational swimming throughout most of the year. And, yes, a friendly beach to rest on and to stroll down during favorable times, and a pier for the locals to fish from, for mackerel, sardines and smelt.

However, no golf course, no gambling casinos, no historical wonders to seduce the vacationing pleasure-boat tourists, or the highway travelers to our town to occupy the proposed 250 hotel rooms, for profitable returns.

It is said that the Port Hueneme city budget is in a crisis and in desperate need of additional funds. However, with the required approval procedures, final design and construction, it is not likely that the complex could be operational with any significant financial inputs to our city before 2012. It is my opinion that no intelligent investor will be interested.

Although the audiences during the briefings had been lightly seeded with the promoter's supporters, the participating residents were overwhelmingly consistent in expressing a negative attitude to the proposed tower, mostly because we do not want to destroy our simple and peaceful lifestyle. I recognize that our city has a budget problem, but there are other viable ways to solve it.

For a city begging to survive and clean-up it's image...the residents sure are being choosy. If they have such a large developer willing and able to take on such a project, they should use this to their advantage and include as many other much needed public works and infrastructure improvements to this project area and have the developers pay for it. This is a wonderful opportunity to help clean-up and revitalize a struggling community. Now's the time to work with these developers and design a project together that will enhance the surrounding areas.
