Williams handles the wind, pins to capture Ojai golf title
The combination of nasty winds and difficult pin placements was enough to rattle most of the 31-player field at Soule Park on Sunday, but Ojai resident Robin Williams didn't blink.
Williams shot a 2-over-par 73 to finish at 1 over for the tournament, two shots better than Oxnard High's Michael William Flynn, to win the championship flight of the Ojai City Championship on his home course.
Despite participating sporadically in the event since its inception 12 years ago, Williams had never finished in the top six.
"By playing this course so many times, it really had a calming effect on me going down the stretch," said Williams. "The course played tough today, with the weather and the pin placements, but I played steady. The real winner out there was the course."
The newly renovated Soule Park got the better of Williams early when he bogeyed the 407-yard, par-4 first hole. Williams recovered with a birdie on No. 2 and followed with five consecutive pars. After a stroke penalty for hitting a shot into a water hazard led to a bogey on the eighth hole, Williams entered the turn at 1 over.
Williams began the final day of the two-day tournament tied for first at 1 under with Ventura's Jason Pridmore and Doug Miller of Thousand Oaks. The three teamed with Flynn, who started the day at 3 over, to make up the final group. Flynn's 1-over 72 on Sunday was the field's top score.
Greg Lenardson of Wood Hills finished third at 5 over after a 3-over 74 round on Sunday. Pridmore, the tournament's runner-up last year, scored an 80 to finish fourth overall at 8 over and Miller followed in fifth at 9 over. Ojai's Charley Griswold, Simi Valley's Mark Modglin and Michael Smith of Ventura all tied for sixth at 11 over.
Williams was able to stay ahead of the field by playing it smart.
"You couldn't shoot at the pins at all today because of the conditions. The course was in great shape, but any ball over the tree line could get away from you," said Williams. "I didn't want to take too many risks and focused on keeping the ball in control. I just wanted to hit the green and two-putt."
The smooth-and-steady approach translated to a 1-over back nine for Williams. After a pair of pars, Williams began putting distance between he and his group. On the 145-yard, par-3 12th hole, Williams stuck his tee shot 6 feet from the pin for an easy birdie putt. Williams was on the green in two shots on the par-5 13th and two-putted for his second consecutive birdie and a four-stroke lead.
Don Crouse of Carpinteria won the A bracket with a 10-over net score. Paul Granata of Westlake was second at 11 over. In the B bracket, Camarillo's Brian Fitzgerald won with a combined net score of 1-under 141. Ron Kaplan of Woodland Hills finished second.
