Bryans make the most of final shot at U.S. clay crown

Camarillo's Bob and Mike Bryan contemplated taking a week off after the United States defeated Spain in the Davis Cup last week.

But the top-ranked team in the world couldn't afford to miss the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston.

Not for monetary purposes, but for emotional significance.

The event was making its last appearance at the Westside Tennis Club, and the Bryans had never captured the title in six previous appearances.

Club owners Jim and Linda McIngvale have been ardent supporters of the doubles game, and the Bryans made it their goal to leave them with a lasting memory.

Checking another American championship off their steadily dwindling list, the top-seeded Bryans defeated No. 2 Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the men's doubles final on Sunday afternoon.

The title was the fourth of the year for the Bryans and 37th overall, which moves them into a career tie with Knowles and Nestor. The longtime rivals have met 24 times and the Bryans' latest victory increased their advantage to 16-8.

"It's the last time the tournament is going to be held in Houston and it's nice to leave with our names on the trophy," Bob Bryan said. "Every time we play Mark and Daniel we have great matches and it's always fun playing them."
