16-year-old Henry rides to first sprint win
Stockton's Johnathon Henry can race with the big boys.
The 16-year-old earned his first Ventura Racing Association sprint car victory Saturday night at Ventura Raceway with a dazzling finish.
Henry passed Greg Taylor on the final lap to snap the Ventura racer's two-race winning streak.
Henry made the right move when it counted.
"I've always been good with lapped traffic," said Henry, who was the VRA Junior Ford Focus champion in 2006.
"It was awesome, my first win," said Henry after defeating Taylor and points leader Kevin Kierce.
Taylor took the early lead and was pulling away from the field, but came up short.
"Second is good," said Taylor. "The kid got around me and I'm happy for him. We finished and we'll come back next week."
Steve Conrad started on the pole and finished fourth. Dennis Rodriguez was fifth.
After six races, Kierce leads in points with 1,315. Taylor is second with 1,255. Defending champion Luis Espinoza is third with 1,125. Rodriguez is fourth with 1,065 and Eric Severson is fifth with 1,030.
Kierce, who won the season opener, said he should have stayed on top instead of going low. "But I've still got the points lead six weeks into the season," said Kierce.
Kierce said he's closing in on the senior division for those 45-and-older.
"In a couple of more birthdays, I can run with those guys and Wiley Miller," said Kierce, a former IMCA sprint car champion at the Ventura County Fairgrounds track.
Miller won the 20-lap senior feature. Bob Alderman was second. Bruce Douglass, Danny Miller and Ron Bach rounded out the top five. Miller leads in points with 10. Alderman is second with 690 and Steve Stasa is third with 660.
Rob Anderson prevailed in the pro dwarf cars feature. Jim Scribellito was second and Lars Wolfe third. Brent Stevens was fourth and Chuck Lippert fifth. Scribellito is first with 985 points. Anderson is second with 945 and Stevens third with 895. Scribellito has won three races this season.
Ed Niedzwiecki earned his third senior dwarf car win and extended his points lead to 1,015. John Lynch was second and Gary Conditt was third. Bill Van Praag finished fourth and Jerry Doolittle fifth. Van Praag is second with 945 points and Coditt is third with 785.
Tommy Velasquez III won the mini dwarf cars I race over Ricky Lewis and Garret Nagle. Chris Noe and Cole Wakim rounded out the top five. Lewis has 755 points and Velasquez is second with 640.
Riley Helland was victorious in the mini dwarf cars II feature. Points leader Tyler Jerman was second and Austin Figueroa was second. Devin McCree finished fourth and Chase Lippert fifth. Jerman has 705 points and Helland 655.
Ramon Rivas won the junior midgets feature. Michaela Stanton was second. Luke Boles was third, Jessica Clark fourth and Amanda Green fifth.
The VRA sprint cars, sport compacts, IMCA modifieds, VRA/USAC Ford Focus midgets and Junior Focus midgets will round out the Saturday racing program. Racing starts at 3:30 p.m.
