T.O. man found dead after fall

A Thousand Oaks man was found dead Saturday behind the abandoned Kmart at 325 Hampshire Road after falling down a steep embankment and onto a concrete parking lot, police said.

Authorities say they believe the death was an accident.

What's clear is that the man fell over a guard rail on Foothill Drive, tumbled down a steep 10- to 15-foot embankment and over a roughly 10-foot retaining wall to the concrete parking lot behind the store, Ventura County Sheriff's Department Capt. Monica McGrath said Saturday.

Police were notified at 12:35 p.m. by a man who observed the body from a distance and sensed something was wrong, McGrath said.

The man was in his mid-40s. Cause of death is still unknown. An autopsy will be conducted either today or Monday, said Michael Tellez, deputy medical examiner.

Authorities are withholding the man's name until next of kin are notified.
