New bald eagle born on Santa Cruz Island
Biologists and dedicated eagle enthusiasts watched today as a bald eagle chick hatched unaided on the Channel Islands National Park's Santa Cruz Island.
It is the third chick born on the island since 2006. Four more chicks were born on Catalina Island in the last two weeks.
"Each new successful nest brings us a step closer to seeing the recovery of bald eagles on the Channel Islands," Peter Sharpe, a biologist with the Institute for Wildlife Studies, said today in a press release. "It's been an incredibly busy and exciting two weeks."
Many Ventura County students watched events unfold via a solar-powered webcam that broadcast live video and audio of the nest over the Internet.
More than 30 bald eagles live on the Channel Islands National Park as a result of a restoration program begun in 2002. Several of the birds are old enough to reproduce and IWS biologists are actively searching for additional bald eagle nests. There could be breeding as late as mid-May.
